i just try to be as impersonal as possible around the creature in question. i don't give them any material to work with. i keep it professional, and i don't give them any open doors to walk through. the one time this person went off on me, all they could muster was "you're always mean to me! well, you're not mean, but...well, you're not like everyone else!"  no. i'm not.Poor thing must have a void inside like a black hole. Personally, I would say something at the exact moment the shade is being thrown. I'm the kind of person that can't let it fester. I think deep in your heart you will know when you've had enough and that's when the claws come out. "Oh no you didn't just throw me shade" snap snap. Good look and don't take any shit.
