Travel: What's up with that? Why do we haul our asses around the world to go see stuff? Couldn't we just look at pictures on the Internet?

I think most people want to experience things, not just see a few places.

But what are you experiencing by traveling, except for the inconvenience of getting places, finding places to stay, spending extra money, etc.? And what for? Don't you experience things where you live? What are you looking to experience "there" that you can't experience "here"?

Well I noticed that I can watch a much TV as I want, but unless I've been somewhere I can't really imagine what it must be like to live there. You can't experience that by looking at pictures or TV shows. People from different countries have different views. The ultimate thing would be to live there for a while and be part of their community and understand them. You can experience a lot of things where you live except those things which make a certain place unique.

And couldn't you learn what you would find out by traveling there by reading what people who live there write? Wouldn't that, perhaps, be more insightful?

Perhaps not, but surely it's more insightful than watching a 30 program on TV about it. How can one describe the smell of the ocean to someone who has never been there or the very humbling effect the Eiffel tower has on a person? If you're sitting at home do you really know what sub zero temperatures (Fahrenheit) feel like if you're from a country where it barely reaches 25? You can have the best of both if you compare your own experiences to someone else's.

You asked why we do that, I gave you a few reasons and there are many more. Being able to travel and learn is a luxury most people in the world don't know. It's not something you need to get through life, to survive, but it will help you to understand other cultures...if you're open to them.

Looking at pictures from the internet of the Carribean isnt nearly like the experience of actually being there, especially if u live in Detroit.

So, you're there. You look around. You talk to some people. You go home. How is your life different than if you'd just, say, seen a documentary about the Caribbean on TV?

I traveled all over this country and there is no experience like it. B4 i met my significant other they never went anywhere in their life until i came in and brought them with me everywhere. Travel is needed to keep a sane mind.

There is the element of escapism and recuperation. Its a good thing, taking a repreive from everyday experiences to experience something different. There are no palm trees on the streets of Detroit. There are no white sand beaches in Detroit and there are no delicious tropical breezes to feel in Detroit. You have the chance to think about life in a different way with each new experience. You can use the experiences of a new locale as a muse. Its all about different experiences.

I've traveled all over the world and I've got to say anything I learned there I could've learned via the Internets (and saved myself some dough and discomfort).

Sure if you are a Zenophobe or Agoraphobe, otherwise...get the hell out and explore your world! The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them. -- Mark Twain.

Sure if you are a Zenophobe or Agoraphobe, otherwise...get the hell out and explore your world! Must one be either a xenophobe or agoraphobe to not wanna drag their ass out anymore? I've explored the world plenty. Even if I hadn't, why should I?

Well if you have...what did you get out of it...and why are you asking why if you have in the first place?
