Movies that surprise u

Nothing better then movies (or anything) that u think will be crap but turns out to actually be quite good. It's alot wiser to have low expectations of films then high ones.

Heres a few movies that surprsied me

i haven't seen 'the black cauldron' though it's on my netflix queue. i'm a big fan of those lloyd alexander books, so it's going to be really difficult to impress me. i can already see that i don't like what they did with gurgi - i always pictured him as a big, hairy, gross creature...kind of like a cross between chewbacca and gollum. they made him a cute little furry toy bear for the movie. not good.

my boyfriend was the same about 'ghost world' - he thought it was going to be another dumb precocious teen movie, but after he saw it, he was obsessed with it to the point that i had to get him the comic book version to keep as a reference text. lol

The Black Couldron is the Bastard of Disney Movies. It almost didn't get released due to it's low production value. My partner says it's sort of enjoyable, but looks like it was 3 movies slapped together..or rather had 3 different animators working on it. I think this is the movie Don Bluth left them over.

It was made during DIsney's "dark" years and I haven't heard that many good things about it.

The scene that cinched it for me was the one where Thora leave that wierd guy to talk to Scarlett on the couch. You can't beat realness like that.

Amen to that. I'm a huge fan of both actors. I've been a fan of Buscemi's since, I believe, one of his first movies, PARTING GLANCES. Scarlett is just HOT!!!!! That voice.

There was a movie called WISEGIRLS that a friend and I rented to make fun of MARIAH CAREY. It was actually pretty good.

I've got to say that I'm not much of a movie fan anymore (except for docs). Used to love 'em, but I just find when I'm watchin' 'em now, I'm just like, "This is so fake". lol That said, I will always check-out the new Woody Allen and Neil LaBute, but I look at them with a different eye now. Closer was good, as far as movies go, but I always use that qualifier now.

Identity??? I thought it wa well acted...and I was expecting more...better. But it's also a movie that has so many "twists" (coming out in the age of "twist" movies) that I really didn't care for it.

Parting Glances was one of the first gay movies I ever saw (when most gay movies were decent) I had no idea it was him. He was young too.

Well, I can think of one that surprised me...in a bad way. I had so many friends recommend Moulin Rouge to me, that I thought it had to be great. That movie was shittier than an outhouse at Woodstock! Seriously, people really thought Nicole Kidman could sing? My lawd! She's worse than Cindy Crawford was in that ad with Little Richard back in the day! Bloody awful!

Oh my God yes. It still breaks my heart when Steve's character is, in a round-about-way, told by his friend that he's his real love.

What I loved about it was that it was one of the first movies about gay men and it wasn't a coming out story. It was kind of a slice-of-life. The issues were relevant to straight and gay people alike.

Mimi from the DREW CAREY show was in this movie also, sans makeup.

Hey Anxiety. I love the books too. Tolkien turned down Disneys offer for a cartoon of "lord of the rings". That went to cult film maker Ralph Bashki, who always used shitty rotoscoping for human movements that never looked right. The film itself of course got a new lease of life thanx to recent film. I still don't like it much. A live action "black couldron" could work.....

I agree on some points with u Sperspaceboy. After they rescue the princess and they go and see the fairies, thats where the movie turns into something else. It gets all cute. The story stops. BUT it is faithful thanx to good animation and for some reason, like the other movies I've listed (like "Oscar" which is Stallone doing screwball comedy pretty well) it has charm. It is dark for a Disney film. By the way, gurgli is voiced by the same man as Golum. The voices are practicially the same.

"the black couldron" is a very interesting movie. U could write a whole book on it. It took about a decade to make. It was the most expensive animated film ever and was meant to be the new "snow white" for Disney.

Disneys dark years are back again now. I love "the fox and the hound" which was made during the dark years after Disney just died. A film that actually has a sad ending.

Another bastard Disney film that I love and always have as a kid (but like "Couldron" they waited many years before a VHS release which annoyed the fuck outta me as a kid) and that is "oliver and co.". Made a year before the second coming of films starting with "the little mermaid", "oliver and co." is very much of it's time but works thanks to catchy pop songs and fast pacing.

A very young Joey lawrence voiced Oliver. Billy Joel does very well as Dodger too.

But the real Bastard of Disney is the Brave Little Toaster...never even made it to the theater it was that bad. It's about a toaster that has low self esteam (pun intended). Not exactly a cheerful story.

I think I've seen that. Iam not sure that is a Disney movie though is it? Anyway yeah it is not too good. "all dogs go to heaven" is the bees knees of western animation that is for adults and kids. Still a steller movie.

Don Bluth never topped this.

I hate Don Bluth. I think he represents the BAD in animation. I do give it tohim for leaving the Disney camp and doing his own thing...but all the while, dumbing down and whitewashing animation at the same time. IMO.

I admit that most his films are not up to Disneys standard. "secret of nimh" (based on the book "Mrs frsiby and the rats of nimh") starts off promising then just trials off into bordom. "land before time" has wonderful animation and one of the best film scores ur ever gonna find period (James Horner), so it is not a complete waste of preachy time. "thumbalina" (spelling?) is gorgeous but is total Disney rip off garbage, "titan AE" suffers like "secret of nimh" does. Not enough depth in characters BUT is not that bad.

Anyone seen the 20 minute "bango"? It was the first thing Bluth did on his own. It is about a orange cat who runs away from home and meets a cat called crazy legs. It was a fav of mine as a kid.

"all dogs....." should appeal to most ages.
