Spike Lee's 1992 film Malcolm X: Was it your favorite Spike Lee movie? I've been watching this film probably all week. Denzel Washington did a great job portraying one of the greatest men of all time: Malcolm X. He definitely deserved a Oscar for what I consider as "his greatest role". Spike is also at his top form here directing this powerful flim. I can't believe this film is 3 hours long, I mean it's very epic and I think it's Spike's most epic, colorful, and ambitious production. By the way, did any one hear Aretha Franklin's cover of Donny Hataway's "Someday We're All Be Free" at the end? Check me out and add me on:

"malcom x" is alright. But biopics just don't interest me that much. Same sorta thing with Ghandi, which people always rave about.
"do the right thing" is his best. I still got the soundtrack. Then, in this order:- "he got game" "bamboozled" "summer of sam" "mo better blues" "clockers" (sort of counts) I have not seen all his movies. I really wanna see "crooklyn" and the film he did about the million man march. Plus his latest one. "shes gotta have it" was ok. "jungle fever" has dated but is still a great film. Remember the devil dance samuel l does? That is funny yet scary at the same time. Also "School daze" was not very good, but "straight and nappy" sequence is a classic, as is that tisha campbell song. "girl 6" was average but i have seen it for many years now.

I haven't seen it in years, so I'm not sure. I just rented "Do the Right Thing" recently because I haven't seen that in years either. The only Spike Lee film to leave a really lasting impression on me was "Girl 6". I love tht movie. "Bamboozled" was good, as well.

My favourite Spike Lee films are:
He Got Game Clockers 25th Hour Jungle Fever Summer of Sam Mo' Better Blues [Edited 4/3/05 12:31pm] There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Y'all need to admit that Girl 6 was garbage despite the soundtrack & I LOVE Spike, mind you
My fave will always be School Daze - it's not his best, just very dear to my heart He'll never top Do The Right Thing, just an amazing film... Summer of Sam was awesome... Bamboozled was powerful but flawed... Mo Betta is dear to me... . [Edited 4/3/05 13:05pm]

I haven't seen all of his films, but I'll always love "Do The Right Thing". The intro alone just kicks ass. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

For me , Malcolm X is Spike's best movie.
Not cuz of him, though, but because Denzel and the subject matter is so good. I appreciated Malcolm X's interest in the psychological legacy of racism ... while other leaders focused on changing society through legislation and policy, Malcolm focused on mental enligtenment. All the equality programs in the world won't make up for what was lost when his voice was silenced. Since this is a music forum , I should say the use of the "Change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke during the scenes leading up to the assasination is superb. Speaking of Spike, I rented She Hate Me last night. It was absurd. And it occurred to me that I don't really like him. I don't like his one-dimensional depiction of women, I don't like his lack of artistic subtlety with the camera. I don't like his stale stereotyping (it's most annoying with Italian Americans. These characters are not real they are caricatures ... and thus not effective at all). And I don't like how his movies lack a cohesive theme. He just situates plots around a subject matter and lets everything rip. That's not the same as a conceptual theme, which all good art should have. Plus, None of his characters have dimension. As an artist, he's mediocre, but as a propagandist he's one of the best ... so it depends on what you want in a movie. ... of course I'v been watching Taxi Driver over and over this week and if you appreciate Scorsese and Deniro, it's hard to find art in a patch-quilt Lee movie. * [Edited 4/3/05 14:19pm]

not my fav, it's Spike's Opus because of the scale and Denzel's legendary performance.
Spike completely fucked up the history and the authenticity of Malcolm’s story though.

"school daze" mostly sucks. It is so muddled and the scenes are so dragged out and dull. As I stated, a few of the songs save the movie from being over a quite a naff movie.
"shes gotta have it" has some bad acting. Does no one remember "jungle fever"?
