I dont understand why people get so snooty about mobile phones. I think you can answer one at a restaurant as long as you keep the call brief and dont leave your company waiting. I dont see why other people on other tables need to get shitty about it.

I also dont undertand why people get shitty at others for talking on phones on publix transport. It's okay for the snotty teenagers to talk to each other at the top of their voice on a train or bus, talking about stupid teen shit, but as soon as one of them talks the same shit into a phone people are aghast. I dont get it. shrug

I am not getting shitty about it.. just wonder why someone goes out with a friend to spend time with them and ends up talking to someone else not there all night.

I do agree that it is very rude to talk for too long when you are at a restaurant with someone. I dont think it is rude to take the call though. We are probably in agreement on that one. biggrin

My statement is a more general one.

See, I agree with you there. I think there's a happy medium. If you're alone and on a bus or something, hey-you could just be talking to whoever's sitting next to you. Its not any different. And as long as the proper etiquette (keeping the call short, excusing yourself if longer than a minute, hanging up before dealing with waiters, cashiers, etc) is observed, I have no problems.

thumbs up!

well, i'm not thrilled about the snotty teenagers, either. they usually tend to gravitate directly to wherever i tend to be quietly sitting and enjoying a book in peace. this is why i always carry my headphones when i go on public transportation - people can just go on with their cell phones or their obnoxious shouty conversations, and i'm oblivious to it all.

i just think it's a matter of tact, that's all. it's not a matter of being "snooty" about cell phone use. it's a matter of being considerate about the people around you, and knowing that the person sitting next to you at the doctor's office probably isn't nuts about having to listen to you going on and on and on about your crummy date or how brenda at work is getting on your nerves, blah blah blah.

at the mall the other day my mum approached this couple sitting in the food court, both talking on their phones. She tapped the lady on the shoulder and said "why don't you talk to each OTHER?" it was a joke but she meant it too. The lady laughed but probably thought what a nosy bitch. lol

Is you “mum” married?
I’m kidding of course…but she sounds like a lively woman, fun and full of chutzpah.

I think those two items you listed are fine…but don’t include the larger examples of abuses people have already mentioned.

If I’m not part of their party, then I’m only annoyed if it’s bothersome; loud talking, inappropriate language, the constant loud ringing, or if their use of the phone affects my ability to proceed at my task.

I will note however, that when we talk to people we meet, rather than only speaking to people we select to talk with, we have a much better chance of being introduced to new ideas and concepts.

Kinda makes you wish text messaging would have caught on more. At least thats quiet.

The people in my office are always getting personal calls on their cell phones, including my boss. They will let it go to voicemail, then not answer it for like 5 hours. The whole time, during that several hours, their phone will beep like once every 30 seconds. It's like chinese water torture after a while.

I don't mind if their friend is giving them the right answers to the quiz. giggle

Text messaging is ruining the pub quiz as we know it.

I don't care if people use cell phones in public places, but yeah, it's so rude when people are out with friends and chat with people who call them. That's what VOICEMAIL is for, people. At the very least, keep it short, or explain to your companion why it's important to take the call.
