She's still Oprah from the block!? http://www.entertainment....29,00.html
Well, maybe not. OPRAH Winfrey's representatives have denied reports the chat show queen is turning her back on her life of privilege for a TV series about the housing crisis in inner-city America. The 51-year-old, who enjoys an annual income of more than $380 million was reportedly going to reside in a poverty-stricken public housing project in Chicago for a month as part of the series. It was also claimed the popular TV star would be shadowed by security guards during the transformation but will otherwise fend for herself like others living in the projects.

I hate this kind of shit. What would Oprah prove by doing this? Fuck all, thats what. We know that there are people living in poverty. By Oprah 'roughing' it for a month merely acts as a massage ego for an individual with vast wealth. A month in extreme poverty? even when them cameras stop rolling? Hmmm. Even if she did continue to live under those circumstances 24/7 it doesnt mean she's living it because at the end of the short period she knows she is returning to a life a million miles away from such a place. It smacks of a rich girl saying "look, i can live like you too". Difference being, that oprah has got a release date from the hell she would be living. To the rest its life, it is'nt ever gonna go away.
There is a song called ' common people' by a group called Pulp and they sing: Rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job. Smoke some fags and play some pool, pretend you never went to school. But still you'll never get it right, cos when you're laid in bed at night, watching roaches climb the wall, if you call your Dad he could stop it all. You'll never live like common people, you'll never do what common people do, you'll never fail like common people, you'll never watch your life slide out of view, and dance and drink and screw, because there's nothing else to do. Sing along with the common people, sing along and it might just get you through, laugh along with the common people, laugh along even though they're laughing at you, and the stupid things that you do. Because you think that poor is cool. I want to live with common people, I want to live with common people etc... Im sure Oprah does and gives huge amounts for charity and im sure she is a self made woman, all of which is very hounarable. However, don't try and kid yourself that you can go back to your roots. You'll never know a girl called Nikki and you'll never find Erotic City

I sincerely doubt that she would pull that stunt. Oh but then again, she did live in the wilderness without electricity, water and heat for 2 weeks. So, I guess anything is possible. Shit, I would beleive it when I see it. [Edited 3/25/05 15:31pm]

It's almost as if making $380 million a year is an inappropriate thing for a black woman in america to enjoy.
Damn people, it's not like she's the CEO of Brown & Root or campaigning to send people off to war. She's just rich, and she made the money herself!!! Got off that woman's dick!

'Idealic'? Is it idealist? Idle? I'd go with 'otiose'. And I'm not smoking anymore! I'm not jobless, I'm self-unemployed! Living in Thailand I guess I should be striving for all things western, high-class, with 'luxury' or 'exclusive' written on it, only wishing to own a Benz and look down on the dark skinned folks. ... Considering how much $ she makes for ABC, the amount of product that sells from a mere mention on her show - how is it inappropriate? She earned that shit, it's all relative. PLEEZE...

COMMON SENCE thats how i see it she makes millions from teaching things that people didnt get at home exactly. it isn't like she's giving a much-needed service to the world, other than mere afternoon entertainment (for some). donating to charities and givin away cars doesn't exactly help most in their daily struggle.

Wow. We've got some opinionated Orgers here. I think that some of the shows that shes done over the past 19 years have certianly enriched our cultural fabric. Her shows these days seem to be alot of celebrity fluff. She isnt tackling many tough issues these days. I think that most of her audience are white suburban females and they may not know what its like to live in the projects. If Oprah decides to do this special, maybe they wont know everything about gritty urban life but hopefully they will hear some of the stories of these project dwellers and it will offer some insight to them. Who knows. Maybe it was just an awful idea to begin with.

Perhaps, you may have a point. Then again with Oprah anything is possibled. As I stated previously in this thread, this is the same women who lived in the wilderness without electricity and plumbing for 2 weeks so she might be able to wing it considering no matter as foolish as it may seem to do now with her wealthy status.
