2the9s said: I agree MarieLouise, and it certainly should not be institutionally condoned. Like this at HouseQuake for example:
http://www.housequake.com...adid=37666 It's actually a sticky in their GD forum! That seems incredibly uninviting to me. It surprised me because I've always thought that HQ was in some ways a more inviting forum for new users. But I don't know it that well. Of course this stuff goes on as part of any social dynamic and I don't know if it can be regulated, but I hardly see it as the sign of a healthy and growing community. By the way, do you see that in this forum or PM&M? Good thread. hehehe....that video is funny. It's also a STICKY at another music site I frequent *coughzeppelinsiteofcoursecough* "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

As you know, it's not the "site" that keeps me around. same here...in fact i've never thought of this place as a website because of that very thing. That's true. The feelings of friendship and community are rather big here. Which is of course a great thing. But it also adds to the fact that it's more intimidating for 'newbies' to start posting. I've been lurking around for two years, I just recently I've started to post some ideas and questions. For those wondering, I haven't been bashed or attacked or something. Nor have I seen cruel examples recently. It's just a general thing I was wondering about, and I wanted to know your opinions. Because there is really this tendency, and yes, it's normal, and it occurs on every site I guess, but still... We can think about it, can't we?

i like to think of the org as being like mel's diner. we got our regulars, and we also have people who are IRregulars and then there are the folks who are just passing through. everyone gets served out of the same coffee pot, as far as i'm concerned.
oh, and everyone can KISS MY GRITS!

Because of my own history here I've been sort of steering this towards issues of site management, but "newbie bashing" is as much an issue for site members themselves as anyone. And sometimes its just a matter of a shift in perception. It's easy to drop in a few comments that are easily recognizable by a few folks and not realize that this can also be offputting to people unfamiliar with the banter; not in an aggressive way, but it can still be offputting.

what would your definition of a newbie be???
to me it is someone new to the site however i had a new sign up go all postal on my ass because i said something like "because you're a newbie you won't be able to post your question for the first five days so you might want to try...." and then they started insulting everyone in the chat. now that gets my back up... we were trying to be helpful
