It was directed by Derek Jarman and it came out in the late '80s. It was a very sexual movie, sometimes violent. Reflected Caravaggio somewhat. ah hell, never mind. i'm thinking of paganini.

I'm a sucker for Italian Baroque, and Caravaggio is also one of my favorites.
His "Inspiration of Saint Matthew" is probably my very favorite painting of his. The banality of the supernatural here is just captivating. The visiting angel and the saint's halo are included as subtly and matter-of-factly as would be a cup or an apple -- no glowing lights and over-the-top frills. And that understatement makes them all the more fantastic. Also, the angel's mudra (blessing hand gesture) and it's indecypherable physical position totally just sucks me in. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

He was a very troubled figure. His life story is so tumultuous. Check out the movie "Caravaggio." Explains a lot about him. He had quite a few male lovers and I think he slept with a few of the boys he painted in his portraits (or maybe that was the fictious movie I'm drawing from?) Nevertheless, the guy had a wild life. You'd think for a gay man, he'd have painted bigger penises. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I see that Caravaggio has already made an appearance. I'm not generally that into baroque stuff, but I freakin' love his stuff. Especially this one, which my husband and I affectionately refer to as "Let's Eat Fruit and Fuck":
I like Friedrich's quieter/gloomier stuff too:

I lub it. A lot of his stuff is kind of cheezy, imho. . . very. . .well, ROMANTIC. . . . . . but these two I really like. Someday I need to get decent prints. . .

I think what I like about the Caravaggio, among other things, is you don't see a lot of bedhead in "fine art."
He just looks like he's offering up a snack in the midst of an all-day fuckfest. And the fruit is starting to rot, the leaves starting to turn. . .ripe and dirty. . . LOVE IT. dirty edit [Edited 3/22/05 21:11pm]

I like Lautrec. His advertisements blur the boundaries between commercial design and fine art - in much the same way as Warhol did some time later.
There's a fluidity to his figures and a sense of movement which you find in modern-day comic books. His pallette always used yellows and ochres which perfectly capture the sense of artificial light which his nocturnal subjects walk amongst.
