i don't wanna jack the thread, because it's about da vinci and to compare him with warhol is total apple-and-orange abuse, but i gotta say - if andy warhol never existed, the right side of my brain probably would have atrophied and slithered right out of my nose at a young age. lol

Why is it sacrilige?
Art is art, just because one is older and more to your liking do not devalue the other.

i have a problem appreciating classical art. my boyfriend loves opera and victorian literature, and while on one level i enjoy the history of it, and kinda appreciating the period of time through the way it was reflected through its art, there's very little classical art that directly moves me. i wasn't around when it was created, so i feel like there's the barrier of time between the original intended message and my ability to appreciate that message. that's why i mainly dig on modern art - 20th century stuff. that's the stuff that makes me cry, makes me mad, makes me laugh, etc.

though i will say i do get really overwhelmed by hieronymous bosch's paintings.

all that said, it's kinda irrefutable to say that va vinci was a genius and a visionary. i'd be interested in learning more about him someday.

he was waaaaay beyond his time nod

Here's the difference between EVERY other artist and Da Vinci; he was a renaissance man, meaning art was just one of his skills he was a master of.

- He had a keen eye and quick mind that led him to make important scientific discoveries, yet he never published his ideas. These included the parachute, the helicopter and scuba gear.

- He was a gentle vegetarian who loved animals and despised war, yet he worked as a military engineer to invent advanced and deadly weapons including tanks.

- He was one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance, yet he left only a handful of completed paintings.

The beauty of the the Renaissance period is the realism in which artists painted. Their depth and perspective work has yet to be duplicated IMO.

You made this easy for me. lol

...But I will say there are other artists of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque period who had uncanny and unsung versatility as well. Michelangelo Buonarroti, for example, was accomplished in multiple media, architecture and even poetry.
