Because i vaguely remember reading somewhere that this is the only realistic way to defeat an enormous, vicious shark that weighs 100 times your weight and has teeth the size of your hand.

Just poke them in the eye. And apparently they then swim away scared.

They are beautiful creatures. I got the chance to swim with them last year at Dyer (seal) island off the SA coast. Absolutely amazing creatures and so inquisitive not the out and out bastards they are painted as. Really gentle and curious. Got to be in the water with a 14ft female and she was really cool they really are not sure how to deal with us humans unless we are floating on the surface looking like a seal....then they sure know what to do.
