I'm just getting into the whole woody allen thing. Not sure why I didn't earlier... Anyway, I saw a preview for this about a month ago and am eagerly awaiting it's release. I'm in!

It's kinda fun to catch up on a singer/performer/filmmaker's work when you've just discovered them. See Manhattan or Crimes and Misdemeanors if you've not already. They're two of his best.

those are classics, definitely.

my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE woody allen movie is 'husbands & wives'. judy davis in that movie is just absolute, sheer, utter perfection. when i feel the need for some serious cinematic diva worship, i just pop that sucker in and bow at the altar of judy as she rants and raves and chain-smokes her way through this movie. everyone else is great in this movie, too - i love mia's character, juliette lewis is wonderfully wacky, liam neeson is sad and adorable, and woody's even really funny and still kinda edgy.

other woody allen movies i really like are 'deconstructing harry', 'zelig', 'alice', 'oedipus wrecks' (from the otherwise lame 'new york stories' movie), and i may be one of the few people who really liked 'another woman'. can't help it, though - i'm weak for gena rowlands.

Okay, we have same taste in movies. You must make me a list one day. HUSBANDS AND WIVES is one of my favorite movies. I think I have it on LASERDISC. Haha!! Judy Davis and Emma Thompson are my favorite actresses in the whole wide world. Did you ever see IMPROMPTU? Oh my God, great movie.

Good to see Deconstructing Harry get its due. Zelig and Alice rock and you're not the only one who liked Another Woman. And, of course, Crimes is my all-time favourite. What about The Purple Rose of Cairo? That's nothing to sneeze at, either. nod

I really like Take the Money and Run to be honest. Especially the talk over describing how Virgil's Grandfather got hit by a baseball and thought he was Kaiser Wilhelm. lol

I love that one as well! Also, a lot of people find September to be really slow, but I thought it was a truly moving and sad film. It was filmed twice, and I'd love to see the first version of it.

I've only seen a handful of Woody Allen films, but my favorite so far is Broadway Danny Rose. LOVE IT.

I don't know why, but the Woody Allen film that has stuck the most with me over the years is his short film in New York Stories. In it, he takes his mother to a magic show and his mother gets chosen to be the person to go inside the box. The magician makes her disappear but can't figure out how to bring her back. Woody Allen has to go home without his mother. He gets kind of upset about it, but life starts to look up until one day...she reappears as a gigantic head in the sky above Manhattan and she starts telling everyone in the city what Woody was like as a little boy...

The insanity continues...

NOT TO BE MISSED

I also think Shadows & Fog is one of the most underrated films of all-time.

Yes, Stardust and BDR are great, too. Already mentioned Cairo up top. Not so much a Bullets fan, here.

If by "SF" you mean science fiction, I think you're thinking of Sleeper.

I just read a review in the paper of Melinda. The set up sounds great -- two writers' versions of a story -- one comedic, one tragic. I love those kinds of stories within stories types of movies.

I saw "Melinda & Melinda" this past weekend and... I liked it! Now one paints a more charming depiction of New York City than Woody Allen smile I thought it was clever, amusing and entertaining. One of Woody's all-time best? No, wouldn't say that - but it is definitley classic Woody by all means. I liked the whole idea that one single story (with all of the basic facts intact) can be interpreted as either comic or tragic depending on how we individually see the world - or want to see the world. The woman who played "Melinda," Radha Mitchell, was quite good. She seems like someone who would've been in a Bergman film at a time when I am sure she wasn't even born. I do have to say, however, that Will Ferrell's Woody impression was very distractng for me - it bothered me and made me appreciate his performance less than the other actors.

Who else saw it and what did you think?
