I'm serious.

Suppose you have a friend that's not from the US. Suppose he wants to move to the US - which state would you advise him to move to? Now I know this is a tough call, but considering as many elements as posible (the location, the weather, standard, people... things like that) which state would you choose?

MN and NH are supposedly the best states to live in.

Any major city. Stay out of the sticks (see the Urban Archipelago article via my sig).

It depends a lot on what sort of weather they like.

That said, I love Washington. First of all, we have Seattle, which is fun and progressive and beautiful. Then, we have every sort of natural experience you could want. Coasts, mountains, rainforest, desert. . .ocean, rivers, lakes, the Puget Sound. . .the coastal area is very mild, with lots of rainy and misty days. The rest of Western Washington is damn near ideal in my mind: rarely gets too hot or too cold, rarely snows, it rains frequently but usually not heavily (we have a lower total rainfall count than lots of places that aren't considered particularly rainy), mostly very mild. Then there is Eastern Washington, which has a climate more like the midwest, with more summer heat and more winter cold, if you're into that.

Well, it depends on the person doesn't it? What kind of person are they? Do they like nature, cosmopolitan centers, homegrown values and friendly neighbors, or a dynamic art scene? Do they like the ocean or do they need some serious downhill skiing? Do they want to attend an Ivy League college or buy a house for good price?

I personally find CALIFORNIA particularly appealing and especially SAN FRANCISCO because of the numerous film festivals. We have ocean, mountains, liberal politics, cultural freedom, and sunshine.

However, I love Minnesota. Can't explain why, just do. Grew up there, you know. Unpretentious, offbeat sense of humor, extreme snowfall, forests and lakes, sporty, writerly, smart, progressive, caring, and the people are wierd in a good way.
