questions 4 londonian people Hi y'all ! I'm writing a comic-book scenario which happen 2 happen in London, & i have a few questions 4 Londonians about a few things i need 2 know... (i'm french, c...)
4 those who know these, my story would b in the same vain as Steve Gerber's "Howard The Duck" or Keith Giffen's "Vext", it's about someone trapped "in a world he never made". So we get a VERY unusual character with a VERY unusual look which gets accidentally (well, not that much accidentally but he believes so in the beginning)transported in London nowadays. So he gets almost unnoticed, i need 2 put him in a London suburb which is so full of freaks that he wouldn't shock people. I remember from my short trip in London 6 years ago that it was the case in some parts of London i've been in, full of technoïds, punks, rastas & other eccentric people, but i can't remember where it was... BUT i would need that suburb 2 have at least a small indian/pakistani community living in it. Is there such a suburb or do i need 2 choose between one of these 2 options ? Which suburb(s) would it b ? I also would like 2 know the name of the English "employment agency", & what kinda formalities & id papers u need when u look 4 a job there. A few infos about how it goes when u go there looking 4 a job would also b welcome. Well, i thank anyone who can help me with this, i might have other questions 2 submit later in this post. Peace&bwild ! Shaomi.

Does it need to be a suburb or in town? [Edited 3/15/05 9:33am]

[Edited 3/15/05 9:33am] Thanx 4 ur interest in helping me. It would b better if it was in town, but a suburb would do it as long as a pak restaurant & an english hotel can b in it. Would a suburb that u know apply 4 both the freaks & indian community issues ? [Edited 3/15/05 9:38am]

Thanx again. About the Job center, does someone know what u need 2 go there : id card ? adress certificate ? CV ? other things ? Is it like in France with a looooong queue & people who r unable 2 help u in the end, telling u 2 try something else that what u wanna do cuz there's no job available in that branch ?

I think you need your passport or driving licence (with photo) and something with your National Insurance No. (you will have to double check that though ), but that's the usual kind of documentation needed for those sort of scenarios. Is it like in France with a looooong queue & people who r unable 2 help u in the end, telling u 2 try something else that what u wanna do cuz there's no job available in that branch ? A job centre is a dismal place One of the problems is that, in order to get money from the Government when you are unemployed, if you are fit to work, you have to show that you are "actively seeking work", then you have to go to a job centre to "sign on". This means you have to go, I think it's once a fortnight (?) and sign to say you are looking for work etc then you get your money. The queues for signing on are always far longer than the queues to find out about the actual jobs. What this means, is that the job centres can sometimes be full of lazy people, who have no intention of working, but who have to go and play along with the game just to be allowed to sign on and get their money. You get to meet some very unpleasant people in there. As a result, the poor staff get hardened by years of being treated like shit, and tend to be blunt at best, downright rude at worst. OK, these are generalisation, of course, but for a comic book, that's what you want, right?

I would agree with Camden Town as the whacky, weirdo kind of place in London. As for the Indian/Pakistani areas there are so many, but Camden is not really the place. A better bet would be to use any area placed along the Edgeware road (A5) starting at Marble Arch and heading north. Kilburn, Cricklewood, West Hendon.
You can take the tube (Northern line) from Camden to Hendon Central which is only about 5 stops or so. Hendon Central kind of splits two communities down the middle. In West Hendon there are a lot of muslims and Hindu etc and in Hendon itself it is more Jewish. (It’s a great place when you think about the worlds problems yet different religions and race mix without issue here, as happens all over London). The Job Centre works like this - You arrive at the centre, look around, feel lost and then ask someone what to do. They point to a phone. You pick up the phone and talk to an obscure pen pusher who gives you a date and time for an appointment. In the mean time you go away with a few forms the size of an encyclopaedia and spend the next week trying to fill it in. You go along to your appointment with some kind of ID, a CV if you have one, your forms and some kind of proof as to why you are out of work (if you were fired from your last job then they hold back money for a certain amount of time). You then sit and wait for someone to see you. They talk to you about work and what you wanna do. They try and force unsuitable jobs on you and act all masterful and self important. You then sign a little book stating you are actively seeking work and are then sent away until the next appointment in two weeks. Your dole cheque arrives a couple of days later (About £130 every two weeks) which you can cash at the post office. At your next appointment you will have to provide proof of your job seeking in the past two weeks like providing evidence of interviews or applications etc etc… Hope this helps. Don’t forget to write an acknowledgement in your comic book… Incidently, people in London are called Londoners not Londonians… Second incidently: Camden is a great place for finding rare Prince 'stuff'... Edgeware Rd is more synonymous with Arabs, not Indo-Pak communties (Although that's a little vague coz they're everywhere now-a-days). Kilburn and Cricklewood is also seen more as an Irish and Afro-Caribean community (I Sister had a Post Office there). And west Hendon, well... maybe But You'd have to go a bit further west of Hendon to find swarming Indo-Paks, like Kingsbury, Queensbury, Kenton and parts of Harrow. Once you hit Wembley, well you might as well say you're in Mumbai. Southall, Greenford, Hayes and Hounslow are the big asian (largely Indian) communities in west London. To be honest, like Mdiver suggested, Camden town is a good bet to use as Shaomi said he only requires an area with a small Indo-Pak contingent.Camden's vibrant with your fair share of unconventional "nutters", and there's alway asians near by here there and everywhere. It's sort of similar to Manhatten's downtown Village, I think! (in terms of cool, independent, off-beat places full of "hidden gems" ). But if you're looking for a true mix of "freaks and nutters" in a predominantly asian area then Shaomi, you need to go to the grimy depths of EAST LONDON I'm talking about the proximities Brick Lane! Whitechapel, Stepney Green, Bow! Hope this helps. Don’t forget to write an acknowledgement in your comic book…
Yeah, and don't forget my name after Jon's Second incidently: Camden is a great place for finding rare Prince 'stuff'...
There even used to be a purple Prince store there. I think it got shut down a while back though. Incidently, people in London are called Londoners not Londonians

: Not true mate... i live in Cricklewood. It is very Pakistani/Indian/Arab orientated. The Irish have moved a little further west to Neasden and Harlsden. The black community are more towards Willesden... Kilburn is just a mixed bag of absolutely everyone... Anyway, this area is but a very small part of London... London has mixed culture everywhere you look... Ive got a mate that lives in Canada Water, now there is a desolate place...
