We all have our opportunities in life and we all have times when people try to hold us back. The "it's because I am a woman" argument may well be true in a lot of cases, but it is also a cop out excuse for a whole host of others. hey yeah, being a man is great, you get everything laid on a plate, every opportunity, every raise, every promotion, no worries, no stress, no one ever judges you for what they think you are rather than what you are... AS IF! Get real.

I think you will get a very different answer from men than from women, simple as that. What is the lesson about, if you don't mind me asking?

AS IF! Get real. I didn't say 'Oh women can't get anywhere because of men." It is a FACT, however, that women make 78 cents to the dollar that men make. If the world is so equal, why has there been no female president? And also, what about the double standard that a woman is a slut if she sleep with a lot of men but a man is a stud?

I thought about this too. But I don't think topics like these immediately fall under politics and religion, because that's narrowing down the question...Is this really only about politics and religion?

I'm just voicing my opinion on threads like this being considered P&R material. I agree with you.

The "stud" versus "slut" thing is the oldest cliche in the book. The only people in the world who think that a guy is a "stud" for bedding loads of women are pre-pubescent boys who are just jealous that a guy has slept with ANY women at all. Women make less money on average because women do lower ranking jobs on average. That is because many women take time out to have children, which slows down their career progression for a while. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the world is a perfectly fair place, or that women don't get a hard time. I am also not slagging women off - I think us men have a lot to learn from women. All I'm saying is that men also get their fair share of shit and whilst genuine sexism exists, it is a) getting less and b) exaggerated. There are certain women who will always blame their lack of progression on the fact that they are female, rather than to look at their own shortcomings as a candidate, and that is wrong. Maybe the guy got the promotion cos he was better!!

Well, I have to choose one article out of a magazine for pupils called Alquin. There is also an article about forced prostitution, as well as there is one on Spongebob Squarepants, Bridget Jones, the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirshi Ali, and many more... The article I'd like to work with is called 'Are boys born unhealthy?' and it's about the biological disadvantages boys have, how the wrong amount of testosterone can cause psychological and biological problemss. The thing is that I'm not allowed to stay too close to this article, the teacher told me 'to do something' with it. So I'd like to broaden the discussion and talk about stereotypes and whether they are right or wrong (in their opinion). It's a class of about 15 girls and 15 boys, so I think this could be interesting. Feel free to make suggestions! I have an overhead-projector, cd-player and dvd-player in classroom. The only problem is that I have little time...

These are the ideas I've come up with so far...
1)Wishing well Students receive a cartoon. The last drawing is left out. They get some time to think about how this last drawing would look like. If they want, they can complete the cartoon. Teacher shows the original cartoon on an overhead sheet. Discussion : is this true or is it a bit exaggerated in our society? 2) Write down all male and female related stereotypes you can think of and put them in a ‘male’ and ‘female’ box. What are the so-called advantages and disadvantages of being a woman or a man? Teacher reads out the stereotypes. Class-discussion. Do you agree with them?

Regarding the "sex vs. stud" double standard, if it's such a crock of shit, why do men marry the "good girl" instead of the "slut"? Regarding the money issue, I'm not talking about men and women having different jobs. I mean women make less than men in THE SAME POSITION. Why would I compare a CEO's salary to a teacher's salary? The makes NO SENSE. As far as men, getting their fair share of shit, that will continue. Women were repressed and considered second class citizens for a long time and held to a double standard when they decided not to live by "society's standards" that were created by men.

I think you're both right...lol For the record, the main place where salary variance takes place are in higher paying salaried jobs moreso than in hourly jobs...and in those types of jobs, your salary tends to be negotiated (or at least can be). Often, the salary agreed upon may come down to simply how a candidate conducts him or herself...the more confident, secure and uncompromising they seem, the more likely they are to get the extra dollars in their paycheck. Unfortunately, things like tone of voice, physical stature and even attractiveness play subconscious parts in how confident and uncompromising we perceive someone to be...and in that area, women will tend to get the short end of the stick. That is added on to the already existing sexist bias that will rear its head in corporate decision making, even if it's only at the level of "Well, what if she decides she wants to have kids 3 years down the road and spend the first year or so raising them? Will we have to find a replacement all over again?"...a valid concern, to be honest, yet one that is only considered when the candidate is female. And for the record, TONS of men marry the "sluts"...lol...marriage is a funny thing, and the reasons people enter into that particular institution are just as funny.

As for the cartoon...yeah, it's exaggerated, but cartoons always are. It's to get the point across like a 2x4 over your head. I don't think the point is exaggerated, though...that is, if the point is that there's still sexism in our society that holds women back.
