1)Scotland
Strong accent, cold weather, rugged landscape

2)Northern Ireland
The "Troubles". IRA. Therapy? (great band)

3)Ireland
The "Troubles". IRA. U2. Very, very bad driving (go there and you'll see!)

4)Wales
Beautiful accent, scenery. Very odd language. SHE STOLE MY HEART THE COW! (Sorry, a girl I went out with for like a fortnight about 15 years ago was Welsh sad giggle)

5)England
Draw a map of the universe, find the middle, that's where we are! Sarcastic but funny, frosty but warm (people, that is). Simple but very complex. Ha, pretty much any contradiction you can think of, that's us!

I'll be bothering you with these strange questions until next monday, I'm sorry ! boxed[/quote]

Muffin, just make sure that your students realise the following (as a lot of people get confused)...

"Ireland" is the geographical term for the land mass encompassing Northern Ireland and Eire (The Republic of Ireland);

"Britain" is the geographical term for the land mass encompassing England, Scotland and Wales.

"Great Britain" is the political term for the three nations within mainland Britain: England, Scotland and Wales.

"The British Isles" is the geographical term for Britain, Ireland, The Isle Of Man and other associated islands within British waters and to the east of the Irish Sea.

"The United Kingdom" is the political term for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I know, it's very confusing. I'm trying to make a clear, short text about the different parts. This may only take 10 minutes. It's a very hard task. I was told to keep this part of the lesson very short.

I hope this does not contain mistakes, as I'm getting more confused the longer I'm working on this lesson.

Lying off the north-west coast of Europe, there are two large islands and several much smaller ones. Collectively they are known as The British Isles. The largest island is called Great Britain. The other large one is called Ireland.

People often refer to Britain by another name. They call it ‘England’. But this is strictly not correct, and it can make some people angry. England is only one of the four nations of the British Isles: England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Their political unification was a gradual process that took several years. It was completed in 1800 when the Irish Parliament was joined with the Parliament for England, Scotland and Wales in Westminster, so that the whole of the British Isles became a single state – The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. However, in 1922, most of Ireland became a separate state. This part is called Eire or the republic of Ireland. Most people are catholic here.
The northern part of Ireland (also called Ulster) remained within the United Kingdom, with its own Parliament and Prime Minister. This part of Ireland is protestant.
Because of the religious and political difference, Ireland has suffered from heavy conflicts for decades.
