You may think you are but your nervous system and reaction times are definitely impaired. The Breathalyzer standards are there for a reason.

I don't feel a thing after 2 drinks...NOT A THING. Everyone is different.

As I said you may not feel it but it shows in your, say, your reaction times, which are particularly important when driving.

Better to not drive than to risk someone's life because you don't feel drunk, right?

totally off topic but.....

regardless to what you think british drink culture is it is healthier to have 1-2 drinks a day than to binge drink of a weekend. 1 or 2 units of alcohol a day can help prevent heart attacks especially when consuming red wine, but as alcohol has a blood thinning property it can help, it's drinking to excess that causes the problems

sorry

just felt the need

Yes, I feel that way too (not feeling nasty enough to do the roll eyes emoticon)

obviously feeling nasty enough to go to the lengths of typing a long sentence about doing the rolling eye emoticon though biggrin

people do realize that driving while talking on a cellphone is a much greater risk than driving under the influence, right?

so, while i sympathize with those who have lost friends and family to drinking and driving (myself included here..i lost a cousin) we should hold the judgement calls...

i dont think the problem is driving under the influence...its the suburban sprawl issue..we need local bars...or mass transportation that will carry our drunks....more and more people are getting DUI's these days...wont be soon until everyone has one....and then who will we belittle and crap on?

so more mass transportation i say!! a bar on every block!!! that will solve our socities problems...

biggrin

co-sign to ALL of that. Especially the bold part smile

Yeah, we all make mistakes and do unsafe things. Luckily I now party with a group of friends who all agree to NEVER drive. I think we support one taxi company ourselves. Of course, when I was younger I was not so smart. Thankfully I never got a DUI before I found a safer way...

Good luck to you EmeraldCity. I hope you learn from this without too much pain.

Wanna hear a horrible story? I went out with the guys a while back and agreed to be the designated driver. So my husband has a couple of drinks right away (that I bought for him. . .and he's a cheap date), meets this guy, decides to take him home to play, comes up to me on the dance floor, and is like, "Hey, I'm going home with cutie over there, ok if I take the car?"

And I'm like, "sure, whatever, I'll take a cab home!"

omfg

So I get off the dance floor and sit down, and as soon as my ass hits the seat and the blood returns from my feet to my brain, I'm like, "HOLY FUCKING SHIT, I just let him drive off drunk!" Matt can attest to my little freakout. So Husband tells me later, just to really help me out on the massive guilt front, that he drove home with one hand on the wheel and is lucky he didn't get pulled over or, you know, die.

Point being, we all do fucking stupid things sometimes. . . most of the time we're lucky and we learn from it. sad comfort

That is a problem in suburbia. I was really lucky not to get a DUI or hurt anyone during my 'partying' days...I was the asshole that would chug a few in the car before arriving to the location to save money and not buy so many expensive drinks inside. I lived in Phoenix and anyone there knows that the city is so damn spread out and there is no great form of alternate transportation. You could live in one side of town and the bar your friends are meeting up at is kind of far. Sure you can take a cab but who the hell is going to drive you to get your car. Excuses I know now...but that was my fucked mentality.

Since I moved to L.A. things have changed and I dont drink and drive....HELL...it's scary enough driving in L.A. sober!!!!!

My brother back in AZ did get an 'extreme DUI' (2 times the limit...he was at a club and decided to have 2 glasses of wine about 10 minutes before he left and the breath test results came back really high) couple years ago and AZ laws are so damned strict...you really get screwed so royally that you never drink and drive again. Thanks to AZ's own George Bush...Sheriff Joe Arpayo and his 'Tent City' ('Tent City' is the jail you're sent to do the time...it's basically outdoors and you sleep under tents...imagine doing time in Phoenix in the 120 degree summer???!!!!! That's hell! Literally!) Anyway...after all was said and done...My brother faced the following...

-2 weeks in 'Tent City' (he would check in at night and released in the morning to go to work

-Over $5000.00 in fines

-Suspended Drivers License

-1-2 months of AA-type meetings (each session cost about 80.00)

-Was thisclose to getting the breathe tester installed into his car so that he would have to blow into it in order for the car to start

He said as expensive it was...it was the best thing to happen to him to open his eyes....he was heading down the wrong path as well...and he opened my eyes too...as well as many friends.

Good luck to you...you'll learn your lesson...and most of all...you are only human and no one is perfect...be thankful that you and no one else was hurt.

peace
