Question Using Mozilla Firefox

I'm trying to download something, and every time I click the link to do so, I get the following message:

You have chosen to open

(download name)

Which is a: Application
from (link address)

What should Firefox do with this file?

Open with (has a drop down box, but whole option is grayed out).

Save to disk (which always has a dot in the circle next to this option).

Do this automatically for files like this from now on (also grayed out).

I'm wondering how I can just open the file and save it to my hard drive, since I don't want to save it to a disk. I would like to change the save to disk option to a save to hard drive option for all future downloads. Can anybody help me out? I tried doing a search for help on this topic, but came up with nothing. Thanks.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

"save to disk" means it'll upload to your desktop and you can click on the link and download your program from there.

i know, it confused me when i first downloaded firefox, too. lol

Go to Tools > Options > Downloads

Look under the "Download Folder" section, and make sure "Save all files to this folder" is checked, and choose a folder from the drop down menu, such as your Desktop.

There are also some extensions at update.mozilla.org, that will allow you to configure your download options even further.

Okay, another question. I already have Internet Explorer on my computer, and wish to delete the Mozilla Firefox so that I can use Internet Explorer exclusively. Can I just delete Mozilla off my computer without any damage done, and how do I designate Internet Explorer to be what I want to use as my internet program?

omfg DON'T DO THAT. It'll completely screw your system. I've heard of people with smoke coming out of their PC and the monitor was ruined too !

Really !

Errr, what i mean is, just keep try and get used to Firefox, i find it do much better than IE.

But if you'd really want to, you can uninstall Firefox from your start - settings - add/remove software . Find firefox in the list and uninstall.

Just go to add/remove programs, and uninstall Firefox. It won't screw up your system. Then go back to Internet Explorer, and under the settings, make sure you set it to be your default browser again.

Firefox is pretty self-contained. Its files are stored in "C:\Documents and Settings\(your username)\Application Data\Mozilla" and "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox"

If you wanted to make Firefox your default browser, instead of IE, keep in mind you can't uninstall IE. In fact, you need it to do Windows Updates, because it won't work with Firefox. From your start menu, choose "Set Program Access and Defaults" and choose "Custom" and from that page, hti the arrow to the right to expand the list, and select Firefox, then reboot.

lol The main reason why I dislike Firefox is because I can't access certain important files that I need access to. The perfect example is email notices that I receive from unemployment regarding the necessity for me to attend an orientation. rolleyes If I do not attend these orientations, they hold my unemployment check for that week. I've had this happen to me twice already, and I don't want it to happen again, since the money I get from unemployment is my ONLY source of income right now (and is very much needed!).

I have uninstalled Firefox, and my computer is running faster now. I know that Firefox has less spyware than Internet Explorer, but I guess I'll take my chances if it means getting access to the important documents I need to be receiving. biggrin

Thanks, Tom, you have been really helpful, and I appreciate it. I have taken Firefox off, and restored Internet Explorer as my default browswer. I find that it's running faster now, which is funny, because my computer guy tried to blame it on my virus protection (Norton Internet Security). At least Firefox was free, because if I had been charged for it, knowing what I know now, I would have been upset.

MrJoker

I was all set to use Firefox as my default browser, but then I encountered problems with it using image maps in html files. Since some of my own sites use image maps and I wasn't able to access the links in them, I've gone back to IE. Microsoft pretty much has its shit together with the latest version of IE.

nod I have to agree with you on your last sentence. Firefox seems to still have some issues that need to be worked out. The fact that not everything is accessible using Firefox as your browser is not good. no no no!
