That's because these guys are REAL athletes in super-physical condition that would end up killing each other without all the protection. And let some regular Joe-Shmoe soccer player go up against pro American Football players even with all the equipmrent on and he is probably going to get hurt if not killed. . That's got fuck all to do with being athletic and all to do with a stooopid game. Football (as in what the people who invented it call it - "Soccer" to those of you in the States) is a game of skill where control of the ball combines with athletic ability (out-running your opponent, running rings around your opponent) to create a fast-paced sport. American Football (as we in the UK call it) is basically a game of Catch with a few extra, pointless rules thrown in to make it seem more complicated than it really is. I understand that in America, it is the wussy, geeky kids who play soccer. Not so over here, it is the sporty, skillful ones who get picked for the team. Changed "football" to "soccer" to avoid confusion edit [Edited 3/9/05 7:32am]

That's because over there, "Soccer" is the main and almost only sport that is played over there. Here in the States there is "Football", Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Hockey, tennis, track, etc....to choose from and the majority of the best athletes go into Football, Basketball, and Baseball. You are extremely over-simplifying Football. There is all kinds of strategy, out-running opponents, skill, athletisism, ball control, etc...involved in playing American Football. I can make the same kind of general statement about Soccer. A game that is played for 90 minutes where there is a minimal amount of scoring (if any), no real strategy and they basically just kick the ball back and forth in the middle of the field all day long. In American Football there is offense, defense, special teams, all with specific skills based on speed, strength, etc. Those guys you see "crouching down and then running into each other" (linemen) are extremely strong and athletic men. All who can bench press over 300 lbs. several times, condition for hours a day for months to play, and use strategy, technics, stamina, strength, to either pass block or run block (offense) or to stop the run or pass rush (defense). Have you ever seen a 300 + lb guard pull and lead on a running play? It's amazing how fast someone that big a can move. Then there are the linebackers, running backs, quarterbacks, receivers, corner backs, safeties, etc...with many receivers and running backs who can run the 40 (yard dash) in under 4.5 seconds. Those are world class atheletes right there. "Always blessings, never losses......"

Here in the US, the majority of the best athletes go into three main sports rather than one main sport like over there. The US has Rugby and Cricket also, but much less popular popular. Please explain to me exactly what is so funny about my post. It is 100% accurate and true. There is as much, no more strategy in American Football than there is in soccer. And I bet most wide recievers, corners and running backs in the NFL are faster than most English pro soccer players. I would say that 99% of NFL players are overall much stronger than English (or any other) soccer players. "Always blessings, never losses......"

You may have also noticed that we are a much smaller country...? Anyways, basketball is dull, just a load of lanky people squeaking away, goddamit that noise gets on my nerves.. I stick with my original diagnosis still; American Football is a very dull game. I am well aware of how the game works, I am not basing this on blind ignorance, I just feel that it is a nothing sport.

RocknRollDave said: Sowhat said: Which is exactly how I feel about Soccer. Fair enough personally I don't follow sport, I'm just winding you up Anyhows... Do you play yourself or just a fan? I am a huge sports fan. Mostly Baseball and Football. I have played Football in the past (High School, flag football leagues) but I am too old now . I have also played on many Baseball teams (High School, Little league, Winter leagues, Babe Ruth league, etc) and Basketball teams (High School, req leagues). I have even played some Soccer, but not in any organized leagues because they were at the same time as other sports I played. I have always played as many sports as I could and I still play in various Baseball and Softball leagues and that's about it now. I guess the main reason Soccer (IMHO) is not as popular as Football, Baseball, or Basketball here in the US is because of the lack of scoring in Soccer. Most American sports fans are used to 98 - 96 Basketball games, or 34 - 31 Football games, or 5 - 4 Baseball games etc...plus most kids want to be supers-stars with big money contracts which Baseball, Football, and Basketball definately have and Pro Soccer here doesn't (yet). NASCAR??? That's gonna piss off a lot of good ole boys...

I love golf...I have been playing since I was a kid. I also followed Tiger on his way up. I live close to where they hold the Western Open and been to it a lot...I think that has a lot to do with why I am into it.
Also like tennis and boxing. Even though I am not a fan of NASCAR...I am suprised to see it on this list...its HUGELY popular...and not just with southerners...I am in Chicago and know a ton of people who live and breathe NASCAR. I finally got into soccer when they had the World Cup hear a few years ago. The German team practiced at my high school. After watching a few practices I saw how hard it really is and how intense it can get. But you can't compare it to American football, since they are obviously, two totally different sports....one thing is for sure...soccer IS growing every year in popularity here.
