Hairspray the (other) Movie: Travolta Is Divine?!

as if it weren't lame enough to make a movie version of the stage musical version of the john waters movie, there's THIS little tidbit from www.dreamlandnews.com :

Hi folks - the big news this month is a bit of a scandal.
Apparently, John Travolta is in talks to appear as Edna in the filmed version of HAIRSPRAY - THE MUSICAL. This new version is not being directly by John Waters. It is an adaptation of the Broadway show. However, the folks who created that successful musical are not happy with this turn of events. They are very strongly pushing for the casting of Harvey Fierstein, obviously. But ultimately it will be New Line's decision, as they're releasing the film. I will keep you posted as this story develops...

michael mckeon has been playing the divine part in the stage musical...if they're gonna go for a tubby 70s tv actor, they should cast lenny the lone wolf!

...though, what's wrong with harvey fierstein? confuse

I actually saw Michael McKeon when it toured through Mpls a year ago. He was pretty good.

Either way, why oh why are they remaking anyway? I can see making the musical on broadway, but a movie of a play based on a movie? It just leave a bad taste in my mouth.

i think it sounds really freakin' stupid, though i'm really freakin' biased.

john waters isn't gonna have a bit of participation in the movie, but apparantly it has his good graces. as long as uncle johnny's getting lots of money for it, good for him, i guess. sigh

that was really lame casting, but i have to admit, he wasn't as bad as i had expected him to be.

i'm sure cruise as lestat will hold up a heck of a lot better than travolta as divine. barf

I'm really biased too, I suppose. I mean, I WAS Tracy Turnblad for Halloween once even.
