I think a lot of people are being too nice to strangers. I'm not saying you should be nasty to them, but polite will do.

I think PT has the key in there comes a point where you can be taken advantage of for your niceness. It's great to be a giving person but at some point you have to recognize if your niceties are being appreciated or taken for granted. I have a friend who is truly one of the sweetest girls I know and she had to learn this lesson the difficult way. Bless her, though, she did not become bitter and jaded and is still one of the most caring and generous people I know.

i think it's more important to be civil than to be nice. niceness can be exploited. civility is the least and most you can give someone.
