Have you read his short story "Guts?" It's at Chuck's Web site. It may very well be the grossest, most stomach-churning piece of writing I've ever read. Apparently, people have passed out from reading it.

you gotta be careful when you make these kinds of statements - i used to be all mr. "cultural elite and proud of it", but then i came to claim that part of myself that sometimes just plain wants to enjoy something big and splashy with lots of explosions and fake boobs. as long as i keep a perspective on what it is i'm taking in, i have no problem with enjoying "populist" media on its own terms.

I just finished The Da vinci code... I liked it...it wasn't great but I liked it....the really cool thing about this book is that it has a lot of people I know who never would pick up a book to save their sorry lives.... reading....I give Dan Brown major respect for doing that! worship

I am STILL working on "Reading Lolita in Tehran"- I started way late, and now may be the only one from 'the bookclob' actually reading it. oppskies.

I also am reading various social work textbooks in preparation for an exam I am taking on Thursday. eeeek!

Good luck on your test ENDO!!!!

I'm reading FRANKENSTEIN by Dean Koontz. The female investigator in this book is the SHIZNIT!! I'm also still reading some book on Nietzsche and I'm still reading ANGELS AND DEVILS. The reason I haven't finished those books is because I was so wonderfully interrupted by 2 other books that dealt with coming out of child abuse. A Child Called It and Lost Boy. There's one more in the series but I haven't bought it yet.

I LOVE Koontz!!! But I dropped this book on like chapter 7 confused

Maybe I'll pick it up again. hmmm

Stephen King is phenomenal. I am in the middle of the Dark Tower Series, gonna start Wolves of Calla sometime in the next month or two.

I like Koontz too, until I pick up the next book of his...only to find that "so and so is really not so and so at all, but unspeakable evil. Bobby Jo now must find a way to get to so and so before the lurking powers take over (name the city or person) and eventually the world. Secrets are discovered, but will their discovery destroy Bobby Jo (or other name, or a dog's name) in the midst of the struggle?

I know what you mean. I was a big John Saul fan back in my day. In his stories the children were the evil ones....IN EVERY BOOK. I was never a fan of Koontz but I'm digging FRANKENSTEIN. It's the first book in a trilogy. I was also a huge Stephen King fan. I've reading everything until he started getting kind of "fantasy". I love his humor. My favorite Stephen King has to be SALEM'S LOT. As lame as it may sound I even liked the original made for TV mini-series. It scared the hell out of me. They have a new version out with, god help me, Rob Lowe. I'm tempted but I don't know.

Speaking of books with good narratives, if anyone ever gets hold of a copy of Fup by Jim Dodge, read it.
