Apple computers YAY or NAY-considering a purchase

I am thinking about buying one but I am not sure about usage. I want to be able to do everything ( and More) that I can do on my PC but I need to know if there are any hidden problems. I am a Apple girl from way back but have never had the internet with one. Can I keep my same ISP? will I be able to still download from the NPGMC. Any quirks or incompatabilities I should know about?

anyone have one?

I've had about 7 Apple Macs and 3 PCs over the last decade and a half and will definately be buying Apple again. I will only get another PC if absolutely necessary.

I give this a big YES for many reasons. please see my posts in this thread http://www.prince.org/msg/100/134287, and let me know if you have any other questions and I'll do my best to answer them. I've heard some (not all) mac users have problems w/npgmc, but i refuse to buy drm laden loosy audio files, so I can't comment further on that. I have over a dozen systems, four of them Macs (and I'm planning to start adding more macs later this year)...

wow thanks for the wealth of information. I am very interested in the MAC purchase, especially since not only has my PC been very difficult lately and crashed but now I have to replace the power supply. mad

still need to know about the compatability with the npgmc--don't want any problems when ticket time comes around again.
I guess I need to contact my ISP about MAC compatability huh shrug

No problem. Mac is compatible with NPGMC.

oh drat!

An Apple can do anything that a PC can do. the fact that they look ten times better than a PC is also a plus.

I managed with npgmc and tickets just fine on my old apple. I am considering getting a new imac soon. just call your isp, they will talk you through all the numbers you have to key in to the control panels for dialling up etc. biggrin

I'd go for a PC (unless you're a pro and have a specific need for a Mac).

Actually I'd say the opposite - unless you KNOW that you NEED a PC for a specific reason (compatibility with work or something) then I'd go for a Mac as you don't need to be a computer pro to use it.

I do agree this is a good article, and it raises some valid points. The article actualy supports the assertion that the Mac is a good choice for the majority of users (by specifying the subset of users who may not be able to switch). There are a couple of minor errors in the article however (many portable music players can be used w/the Mac, not just the iPod - though why anyone would want something other then an iPod is beyond me wink )

I completely agree with this one, it's a much more sensible approach.

Handclapsfingasnapz: Keep in mind the price of entry has been lowered ($499 for the Mac mini) and don't forget the used market. The older iMac/PowerMac G3/G4 (at least, the ones above 500mhz) are very capable systems (I have an iMac G3 500 and a PowerMac G3 which is upgraded to a G4 550mhz, and run the latest Mac OS X w/o a problem).

Hey Butterfli, I have one. mac

To address your first point, a MAC will allow to do everything and more that what you could possibly do on a PC.

There are no hidden problems and the latest OS X is so strong an operating system, it never crashes. You an click and go, as opposed to my limited experience on a PC, where you have to click and wait for something to happen.

Internet is much better, you aren't open to viruses that infect a PC. You know, the ones that destroy your hard drive within a matter of seconds. Viruses sent through email cannot affect a MAC, unless they're specifically created for a MAC, but that is pretty rare.

Unless your ISP company has issues with MAC, you should be able to keep it without any problems.

And YES, you can still download from the NPGMC. With OS 9 and X, I have had absolutely no problems with the website.

No incompatabilities, you can even run a windows operating system on your MAC with "Virtual PC."

The only quirk is... you will seriously wonder why you ever used a PC in the first place.

Tell me, do you bleed? You will!

I love Apple everything. Elegant design, a dream to use, thumbs up!

Now, the NPGMC bastards try to make it hard on us. lol I've had NO trouble with ticketing, but the NPGMC is notoriously awful about taking mac users into consideration as far as media access. There are procedures for using the downloads posted on the NPGMC boards-- you can get around the problems -- but it's annoying.

The only other problem I've had as a Mac user has been using the streaming media at some news websites. . .I think CNN and MSNBC both have set up their video streams so that mac users can't use them, for some damn reason.

Other than that, I've been using Macs for years and have had virtually no problems with compatibility, software availability, all of those things people fret about.

I would highly suggest if you have further questions to stop into the nearest Apple Store (if there is one near you) and talk with one of the guys at the Genius Bar. They are a great resource for all things Apple. thumbs up!
