I am soo feeling inferior right now...

..@least when it comes 2 my art anyways...here's my problem

many people have said that my art is ok..."ok"....right i can handle that...but then i see why they think it's just "ok"...i see other art work by some of my friends and i wonder what the hell am i doing even trying...i mean, they're not even going in2 art as a future career and they're awesome at what they do, what makes me think i, being so fucking novice at the discipline, would even stand a chance in university, among rich pompus pricks who think their work's the shit? what am i going 2 do? i have barely anything 2 show for myself and even worse, im losing motivation and inspiration....sigh i hate competing in something that's so dear to me, it's not my style...how am i going to survive in university? i think im getting cold feet about the whole situation..im so frustrated and mad and feeling discouraged....my family basically could care less cuz im not going 2 be some big bad doctor or surgeon...so they've turned their backs on me...i really dont know what to do....

how do i continue to do something i love when i feel that it's in vain cuz it doesn't amount to anything?

well i'm an artist to and most of my friends are to. do you and other artists have critiques? it seems that if your art or a certain piece is just okay then maybe they should tell you honestly what they like and don't like about it and that will help you to think about what your approach the subject or piece is. i'm sorry your feelin inferior...don't feel that way and don't let anyone make you feel that way.

catharsis

If there is something that is hard to compare, then it's different works of art. Different types of art are good for different audiences/purposes. Many people might argue that for example Bill Waterson (of Calvin and Hobbes fame) is way inferior at drawing than, say, Luis Royo. They both work in the same field of business (comics) and Royo might have more skill when it comes to accurately portray the human face and body, but I'd like to see him draw Calvin and Hobbes as vividly and funny as Waterson!

So don't compare your art that way. I'm sure you have unique skills when it comes to what you're doing.

I know how you feel. I am also in a university and sometimes there are moments in which you wonder if the major you picked is the right one. I am also having doubts about my major. There have been times when I think, "What am I doing? I don't know what to do so I am going to be a big nothing/nobody". But i think that no matter what people say if you have passion for your major then stick to it. I don't think that there is a standard on how art should look like. Art is like people. We are all different type of people so art in my opinion is the same way. So don't worry too much about it. hug

I really like spicy food. I mostly put Jalapenos on a lot of my food.

I sometimes feel the same way about my painting. I mean damn, Byron's my best friend and he could throw up on his kitchen floor and it would be perfect and pretty and spiritual and you could charge admission to see it. giggle nod

So I know what you mean.... don't compare yourself to others and don't give a fuck what other people say about it. Think about why you create. Do you do it for other people or is it the process that gets you off? Love what you do Sammi, it came from you, it is an expression of the creative energy that lives in you. Not many people can literally see and hold evidence of that almighty power. You can. Be thankful for that gift.

Why don't you post some pics Sammi?

I'd love to see your work. I'm sure it's more than "ok" biggrin

I really would like to see more of what you have done. biggrin

one question, one bit of advice:

1) how long have you been doing art?

2) you honestly shouldn't be lookin at other people's stuff and comparing your own work to theirs, cuz it'll do just what's happened to ya--then again, it depends on the artist. some will feel that their own work is subpar in comparison, while others really don't give a damn and just do what's theirs and not care about the cat next door.

be the latter. you'll be all the better for it. thumbs up! hug

My high school diaries were full of doodles just like these. I ended up going into graphic design, with a passion for typefaces (which was obvious from an early age since my doodles were mainly typographical). I love graphic design, though it's not "art" as it is not self-motivated - you work from someone else's brief.

Fauxie

conufsion? confuse

I like your doodles sammi. nod Just keep doing what u do and don't think about it all too much. U never want to make yourself stop enjoying it just because u're worrying about what other people think.

I used to draw and paint quite a bit, and then got more into graphics and design, but haven't drawn anything for myself in about 2 years (just illustrated books for the kids when I was teaching). Bad really. I used to be into photography too, although I was never nearly as talented as some of the creative people on this site.

I used to feel the way u do about my music too. I know so many talented people who play jazz and are multi-instrumentalists and it does sometimes get me down that I have not mastered any single instrument. At the end of the day, I can only do my best and if I enjoy making music to the level I can, why stop? It has to be fun.
