The little ding-y sound that's supposed to go off when you leave your lights on does not work for some reason and I've left them on at least 12 times in the last year. Sometimes more than once in the same week. I'm really not an airhead (I swear!) but I just can't seem to consistently remember to do this ONE thing. I've already replaced the battery once. The last time was just yesterday when I got home from work. I left to go to work this morning and discovered a dead battery, yet again. Now, I have a Triple A membership, but even with the expensive level you only get 4 free service calls a year and I've already used up 2 in the first few months. So I decided to suck it up and walk down the block to take the bus to work. Which I actually don't mind, cause it gave me time to stop for coffee, walk around downtown a tiny bit, it's quite a nice morning, etc. But how am I ever going to remember to turn my lights off??? [Edited 2/25/05 7:41am] I will be your official 'turn the lights off' man.

I used to leave my lights on a few times a year but my new car has daytime running lights so I never have to turn them on or off which is nice.

you cant be serious!!! so allll those men driving those racecars (or regular cars) on those racetracks (or freeways or city streets or whereever they might fancy) arent dangerous??? Sorry! You're right Mad men and women + cars = danger Better now? i hate this idea that women and cars dont mix! its like when you go to the car part store to pick up a windshield wiper..or a headlaight...or a dome light...or a belt..or some fuses...or whatever you might be there to pick up, and the clerk treats you like you are a complete idiot and couldnt possibly find it yourself...because you are a woman. i hate that!

Everything automatically shuts off in my car and the car won't lock if the keys are in the ignition. If I ever get a car that doesn't do these things I am sooooo screwed!

Apparently not or I would turn them off! I usually end up leaving them on whe it's that weird twilight period where you turn your lights on cause it's just dark enough to have to have them on but not dark enough to really make much of a difference. And I'm also a very legal driver and in MN you have to turn them on if it's raining or snowing so sometimes it can be quite bright outside but my lights are on. |

If I'm putting any money into the car at this point, I would first put in a radio or CD player or something. it's prolly just a fuse or somethin real easy...you should have it looked at next time you get a tune-up AND, you should buy the box-charger thing from Target. Then when this happens next time you'll be good to go!

Keep an ugly or gaudy bracelet in your car someplace where you can't miss it (on the drivers seat/steering wheel/ignition switch), and put it on every time you drive. You're not allowed to take it off until you turn off the lights.
I'm bad about leaving the lights on or locking the keys in the car, but I've gotten much better. I forget exactly what I did to train myself with the lights, but it was something like the bracelet trick. It helped.

My lights used to go off automatically when I got out of the car so I'm used to leaving them on. But lately it's been glitchy & they stay on sometimes. I'm in the same boat, trying to remember to turn the fuckers off after years & years of leaving them on

Question: why aren't cars generally built so that the headlights turn off whenever the car isn't running? Is there some sort of conspiracy between the auto manufacturers and AAA?
Two things I liked about my Fiat (Italian) were:
OTOH, I had a BMW where the headlights would turn off with the car, but the parking lights would not. That made it nearly impossible to notice that I'd left the lights on, and I drained the battery once or twice that way. I can't remember whether it was by design or an electrical problem (that car had a few electrical issues). Anyway, since I moved to Seattle, I usually get around by bus, and I let Metro Transit worry about the headlights. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |
