omg! I'm SUCH a dumbass!

nutty

For the life of me, I can't seem to routinely remember to turn my headlights off on my car. The little ding-y sound that's supposed to go off when you leave your lights on does not work for some reason and I've left them on at least 12 times in the last year. Sometimes more than once in the same week. I'm really not an airhead (I swear!) but I just can't seem to consistently remember to do this ONE thing. I've already replaced the battery once. The last time was just yesterday when I got home from work. I left to go to work this morning and discovered a dead battery, yet again. Now, I have a Triple A membership, but even with the expensive level you only get 4 free service calls a year and I've already used up 2 in the first few months. redface So I decided to suck it up and walk down the block to take the bus to work. Which I actually don't mind, cause it gave me time to stop for coffee, walk around downtown a tiny bit, it's quite a nice morning, etc.

But how am I ever going to remember to turn my lights off???

you could always hire someone to sit in your back seat and whenever you get out of the car, they could scream "OH MY GOD!!! TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS OR WE'RE ALL DOOMED!!! DAMMIT!!!" and that would do the trick.

i'll volunteer myself. you wouldn't even have to pay me that much - just throw a falafel at me a couple times a day and i'm good to go. biggrin

Add an attachment (stringlike, I am sure you can make it yourself)... running from the light switch/handle... ringing around your finger. I am sure you will never forget.

I would do this, for real... if I had that problem. My problem is... I leave the dome light on quite often myself.

hmm Thinking of a trick for that... maybe if I boobie trap it... and when I open the car door... something pops out (like a jack-in-the-box) and hits me on the head. err Yeah, that's it!

I always do stuff like this...or lock my keys in the car...I think it's a good idea to, before you get out, double-check and make sure everything is off and your keys are in your hand/bag.

I'm totally gonna have to do something like this. It's become quite the problem.

But see, I usually double check. It's when I forget to double check that I leave them on. It's usually cause I'm off in my own little world in my head somewhere. I once ran a red light cause I was just not paying attention and was so intent on what I was thinking about. I just drift off like that sometimes. redface

I had this problem with my first car many years ago.
I used to give copies of my car key to everyone I knew, that way I'd always be able to find someone near to help me out.

It was stupid.
I don't seem to have that problem anymore.??

It's NOT hormonal! It's just. I mean. Sometimes I just get lost in my head. Everyone does. Boys and girls. I have an active imagination, dammit! mad

Maybe just put a big reminder sticker right in the middle of your steering wheel. That's what I'd do.

It makes it worse that I don't have a radio at all in my car. If I had music, I'd just be singin' along and whatnot. Sometimes I sing in the car anyway. giggle
But since I don't it's really easy to just sort of drift away like that.
But really I am a good driver. I promise.

oh, but that would be too easy! lol

Also - the car is over 10 years old. It seems silly to pay to fix something like that. If I'm putting any money into the car at this point, I would first put in a radio or CD player or something.

My car is also ten years old actually, and so far I've had to get two things fixed.

First I couldn't signal left. That is suuuuch a nuisance. If it had been the right signal I might have lived with it, but now I had to do something about it. (CAD 150)

Second, one of the motors of my power windows had to break down. Guess which one? Yes, the one on the driver's side. So every time I was driving into a public garage I had to drive a bit too far and then open the door to get the ticket instead of simply rolling down the window. And since I love driving with the window open when it gets warmer outside, I just had to get it fixed. (CAD 250)

So I ended up shelling out CAD 400 on my old Ford. But I actually think it will have been worth it the day that I sell it. People pay way more for a used car that works perfectly than for one that has a few problems.

Touché.

But the membership is a gift from my parents, cause they know I drive a sad, little old lemon of a car.

Oh, I hear ya. But this is a car I only paid $500 for to begin with, so I assume I will be the last owner of this car. If I get a flat tire or minor under-the-hood problems I'll fix away as long as it's still worth it. But the little things would be just for me, and anything that costs much more than $500 to fix are just kinda silly.

mad you cant be serious!!! so allll those men driving those racecars (or regular cars) on those racetracks (or freeways or city streets or whereever they might fancy) arent dangerous??? confuse
i hate this idea that women and cars dont mix! its like when you go to the car part store to pick up a windshield wiper..or a headlaight...or a dome light...or a belt..or some fuses...or whatever you might be there to pick up, and the clerk treats you like you are a complete idiot and couldnt possibly find it yourself...because you are a woman. i hate that!

carrie...im sorry that this keeps happening to you. hug i know how it feels...member when i was locking my keys in my car all the time? seems like i couldnt go a month with out doing it! it sucked! LOL but you will get in the habit of turning off your lights eventually...and maybe creating this thread will help!

and for the record...carrie is a very safe and cautious driver! i have been on many a road trip with this girl...and she drives just fine. in fact...she drives better than me...thats for sure smile giggle
