Morning Breath

Does anybody else suffer from this embarrassing problem? I can brush the heck out of my teeth at night before I go to bed, but when I wake up in the morning, my breath still smells funky. lol I make sure to brush my teeth before I leave the house, because I would hate to open my mouth to talk to somebody, and they would look at me like this: whofarted boxed lol
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

brushing your teeth generally wont make much difference

try buying a tongue scraper to get rid of the bacteria on your tongue in the morning

Thanks, that's a good suggestion. Funny thing is, I brush my tongue too at night when I go to bed, hoping to ward off bad breath, but it doesn't seem to work. giggle

for chronic halitosis there are medical conditions that could be causing this condition, if you have really really bad breath

but morning breath? i think to some degree everyone has this problem. it's natural, y'know?

The Effects of Daily Mechanical Tongue Scraping vs. Daily Mechanical Tongue Brushing on Bacterial Flora
Ronald E. Mangie, B.S. Bacteriology, D.D.S

Results:

Bacterial counts:
Individuals who scraped their tongues displayed a significantly lower total Strep Salivarius count than individuals who brushed their tongues. Furthermore, no apparent damage to the tongue tissue or the taste buds was observed.

Clinical studies:
The tongues of the patients who scraped were significantly cleaner and pinker than the tongues of patients who brushed. Additionally, the individuals who brushed their tongues often complained of gagging, choking and other discomforts, while the number of these complaints from the individuals who scraped their tongues were significantly less.

Cleaner Taste:
A related significant discovery of the study is that those subjects who scraped their tongues reported a cleaner, fresher taste in the mouth, and a marked improvement in the taste of food. Similar sensations were not reported by the subjects who brushed their tongue

I had one of those, but I can't use it. My gag reflex is just too strong and it would cause me to throw up. And that just made my breath worse. giggle

Morning breath is normal. During the day we brush out teeth and then eat and drink things, which helps to mechanically keep bateria levels down. Overnight your mouth becomes a breeding ground. Reducing bacteria as much as possible just before bed (brushing, flossing, and a full 30 seconds of Listerine probably being your best bet) can help, but you'll still have normal oral bacteria.

they work really well, don't they? when i first began using one i was a bit turned off by that head-buzz noise of the brush itself. i couldn't help thinking 'what if this cool toothbrush is just another one of those alien mind control devices'!?

but, my teeth are so squeaky clean i figure even if it's alien technology the sonicare toothbrush is a still a big thumbs up mr.green

Definitely. I can't stand to use a normal toothbrush now. I just don't feel as clean.

grouphug Thanks all, for your responses, I have read each and every one of them. I'm going to buy a tongue scraper and some Listerine. If that won't kill funky breath, nothing else will. lol

My remedy: Plax, brushing teeth and tongue, and mouthwash. I should include flossing on the regular, but I'm so lazy when it comes to this.

Anyway, I never understand why it is that people must have garlic for breakfast. Don't know if they do really, but this is what I think I smell on some people's breath first thing in the morning. sad Maybe the funk is from garlic pills? confused

Okay, I just got back from the drugstore a little while ago, and I purchased this:

and this:

Both of them are battery operated, which for me, is something new, since I usually buy the manual toothbrushes. After finishing using the battery toothbrush, my teeth actually looked cleaner! omg Then I used the tongue cleaner, which was gross the first time around, but it also did a good job. Hopefully these two things will help fight funky breath, if not, I'm going to have to invest in some Listerine too. giggle

The alchohol is what kills the bacteria, which are what cause odor! Mouthwashes without alchohol manually rinse the mouth and are usually minty, so they help some, but they don't address the root problem. Listerine does NOT damage the mouth or cause bad breath. There has been actual reaserch done on mouthwashes, and Listerine is the best.
