Hi, Gold,
Interviewing can be stressful. You mentioned that you never have questions for the interviewer. Some interviewers do like to hear that you have questions because they take it as an interest in the position.
If you haven't already you can ask things like:
How did this position become open - was it vacated or is it a new position?
Can you describe what a typical day would be like here?
At the end of the interview you can ask when you can expect to hear from them.
Aslo, as far as being out of the work place for 16 years, being a mother is no joke! I'm sure you definitely gained plenty of skills that can be applied ot the workplace: multi-tasking, working long hours, finance and budgeting, psycholgy, etc.
It might help to go into an interview thinking "What do they have to offer to me?" instead of "What do I have to offer them?"
And I know this is easy for me to say, but try, really try to forget about your speech impediment. You'll be fine! hug

That is so true about not lying!! How can I sell myself when deep down there is nothing 2 sell??
Also I have no CV, because I havent worked in 16 years due 2 being a stay at home mother, and other people have told me 2 make up one, but I cant put ficticious jobs in it, because what about if they decide 2 contact these "jobs" for references or whatever and they find that these "jobs" dont exist???? Thats me straight out the door!!!!

That doesnt leave a very good impression does it???

It's not WHAT you have to talk about , it is HOW you talk about it.

Here;s what I mean:

You say you haven't worked, you've been a stay at home mother.

I say, put it like this:

You made a conscious decision to not compromise on your children's well being, so dedicated yourself to that until such a point where the kids no longer need that around-the-clock care and you can take all the organisational skills and multi-tasking that you have used so well with the kids and translate it to the world of work and get out there and not let these golden skills go to waste.

See? It's all about SELLING

nod

worship FANTASTIC answer woot!

see, you HAVE worked nod you have kept a home together, managed bills, molded children, taught morals - behavior - lessons - and countless ways to behave and get through the world to children (which is not always an easy job no no no! ), worked through difficult teachers, held the hand of a small child when they are afraid or nervous, worked as a one woman support team, remembered birthdays and holidays and coordinated all of them, if you are a mother - you know how to cook under stress, make a healthy dinner out of whatever's around, you always have the interests of those around you in mind, you must stay focused, calm, cool, collected - even in the face of sheer disaster eek

heres the deal.. i could go on forever about this... you just need to rally your personal skills woot! interviewing is not that hard if you can remember that you are just talking to a person... a person who at one time may have been in your shoes. the boss was not always a boss no no no!

be enthusiastic, sincere (tell them you WANT the job, thats the biggest mistake is not telling them that you want to have the job.), be yourself - let your best qualities come through, be prepared - have information they may ask for handy, be honest - you may not have been 'working' in the job market over the past years... BUT you have been working nod im a momma, i KNOW what you do for a living (and its not always easy hug ). show your passions when you interview... bring out what you are best at nod and SMILE !!!!! you are worth talking to and you need to convey that to the interviewer. also, wear what you feel comfortable in, what you think looks best on you... when you are dressed well - you feel more comfortable, and it will show in how you carry yourself rose

lastly, get RID of the attitude you have now, its not helping you.... go stand in front of a mirror, remind yourself of all the great things you have done, and all the wonderful things you have to share with the world... play your favorite music on the way to the interview, go in upbeat and smiling, knowing you have tons to offer - they will pick up on that nod if you go in unsure of yourself... they will pick up on that too hug

best wishes sweetie hug and KNOCKEM DEAD woot!
One of the best days of my life... http://prince.org/msg/100/291111

Keep up all the good work - it WILL pay off!!! biggrin

I wasn't even there and I can think of at least 3 questions.

What do you like most about the customers that come in the store?
What are the other workers like?
What type of work environment is it here?
What do you like to see in your employees?
What kind of health inspection do you have?
How did you come to work here?

Also, I think one of the reasons is that I am not an easy person 2 draw out!! I am fine online, but in real life I kinda withdraw into myself!! And in interviews I tend 2 hold back and remain very deep in thought, mainly thinking about problems I have at home or other worries, so really my heart and mind is not fully with the interview!!

I really want help in this as I would love 2 get a job!! sad sad sad

I think you have your biggest answer right there. If employers think you have something to hide or are not outgoing enough, that may be a deterant. Be happy, bright and friendly!

I would suggest that you get a friend to mock interview you and maybe pick up a Guide book on the subject. A good one will go over all of the question you could possibly be asked and how to answer. It also gives you questions to ask your employer.

Good luck to you!

When asked tell me a little about yourself...this should be 1:30 - 3 minutes.TOPS Do not get too personal.

1 min or less on your past background and where you came from. You can include family stats.

1 min on your previous jobs (brief...you can go into detail later)

1 min on what you are looking for. (you can include likes and hobbies here)

Also another thing is and I am embarrassed 2 tell people this, but I have a slight speech impediment, stemming back 2 my childhood and teen years!! Back then it was far worse than it is now and when I speak normally in normal everyday life u wouldnt know I had one and I can carry out normal conversations, but in nervous stressful situations my speech impediment comes out a bit!!

It is a God-given miracle it suddenly dissappeared during my late teens and 20s without the help of speech therapists or anything!! But it does occasionally come out in certain stressful and nervous situations!! biggrin biggrin

Hey, we all have our flaws... just don't dwell on it... if it's not a problem for you, it won't be a problem to anyone else... its about confidence.

If only the perfect people in the world could find employment, there would be a lot more of us looking for work nod

That's right. For an interview...if you show complete confidence, you'll be fine. It's only a speech thingy..imagine if you had a physical handicap...then you'd have to sell yourself.

On how I can improve on my interview skills?? Or where I can go 2 get help on this?? I just dont have any skills whatsoever in this!! I have been on lots of interviews but I always seem 2 fail!! sad sad sad

A case in point is when we first arrived back in the UK from the USA, I went for an interview at a grocery store(cos I was on Jobseekers Allowance which is only paid 2 u if u are looking for work). And the person who conducted an the interview told me there and then anything and everything about the job, then she asked me if I had any questions and I said no,cos she covered everything I needed 2 know in the first 10 minutes!! The thing is, for example, u cant ask what the firm does cos u can see perfectly well what it does being a grocery store!! lol lol It doesnt take a rocket scientist 2 figure out what a grocery store does!! lol lol Unlike if u were applying for a job at a manufacturing firm then u could ask what the firm manufactures, is there chance for transfers to other branches, etc.

Just to come across as confident and be knowledgable about the company I find helps. Good luck!
