16. i moved in with my ex boyfriend who was 20. no circumstance i just thought i was old enought and knew what i was doing(but i didn't). my parents told me later that they used to secretly go up to the school to make sure i was still going, which i was, i was still a honor student. my dad was real strict and he used to lock us inside the house when he went to work at night. but little did he know that putting a lock on the inside of the door just made us want to sneak out!

In 1995 I briefly (for about 3 months) moved out with my best friend Harriet and her man and her (then newborn) daughter but I moved home again... then in 1998 my Mum passed away and that was when I really properly moved out with a flat of my own...it was dingy and old but it I kept it clean and tidy and it was my own space I loved it!

24 - I got married and moved to a one-bedroom flat in West London. It was tiny and the shower only had a little one litre cylinder to heat the water so to have a decent shower, we'd have to heat the water, damp ourselves a little, wait for the water to heat again, get a little bit wetter etc. Washing hair was a nightmare - it used to take around 20 heats!

i moved from indiana to NYC when i was 23, and after that i eventually moved to chicago, but i never moved back home. my mom was really excited and supportive at first, but when it got down to the last few days before i moved to NYC, it was hell on wheels, like on 'one day at a time' when julie ran away from home.
what was it like where i moved? well, it was a borough of new york city. lotsa people, lotsa concrete, lotsa cockroaches.

I was 18, moved into a 2 bedroom flat with a girl called Debbie who I grew to hate more and more the longer I lived with her. I was such a goody two shoes and she once invited practically the whole bridal party of a wedding she went to to get drunk and pass out on our floor. I had to climb over several people in the hallway to get out the door the next morning.

I was 19. I moved to study Fashion Design.
My apartment was great. It was clean, freshly painted, new carpet, perfect lighting. I was lonely as hell but it was nice. "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

18 - moved from the farm to the big city for university.
it was probably the nicest apartment i have had. top floor, cedar ceiling and soundproof walls. nice and quiet with big windows. i don't think i was ever homesick but it could get awful quiet at times. i tended to keep the radio on whenever i was at home. (didn't own a tv!)

18-the reason being was that I went to university. The place I lived in was vile and depressing. A communal block with 12 other lads in the middle of a student village. We had a communal kitchen and shower area making the complace a total shite hole.
In the kitchen we used to have a 'sin bin'. Basically, it was a cardboard box whereby if dirty plates and cutlery were left to fester on the side in the kitchen they were put rightly so in the sin bin and if not washed after a certain period would be thrown out. My mate Anna came round to shag a housemate of mine after a night out down the studen union. She had hairy legs (apparently) so I gave her one of my Bic oranges so she could shave her legs in the shower before she went to his room. That dirty razor was left in the shower for months! As you can probably tell, it all got a bit too much sometimes. One night my friend Dino (who remains my best mate to this day) chucked the communal ironing board from the top floor to the ground because my other housemates were making noise after they'd been out clubbing. The ironing board broke in two. I knew it wasnt me and Dino didnt admit to throwing the ironing board a good few years later! Horrible, dirty student days!

Ex-Moderator | I moved into the dorms at 18 for my first year of college. It was, well, a small room but I got along with my roommate and really, it was fine. I dropped out of college my first year and moved back home, however (long story), but by the following winter I moved in with a friend who had her own apartment. That experience was CRAZY! She was a meth-head at the time and while I'd already been through my own rave days and whatnot I really didn't understand what was going on with her, I was sort of moving in to help her figure stuff out. It was a one bedroom apartment and at any given time we'd have 2-5 people staying with us. I was fascinated by it all, and everyone was afraid of me (being the only "straight" person around). However, within a month I was sick of it and within 2 months I found my very own first apartment at age 19. It was in a cute little area of Uptown, old building with hardwood floors and funky old fixtures and it was pretty small and I had a roommate and we shared this huge bedroom and I still remember that apartment fondly. |
