Spiralling debt

Without going into too much details as to what's happened to day...do you think people who are in so much financial debt have a mental problem as such or is it just sheer greed?

IMHO it is just the society we live in. We have to have everything now and so when credit is easy to get we just go and get what we want then suddenly it catches up with you.
Been there done that 20k at 18 but saw sense and worked my ass off. All paid and never again. Still use cards but would not get in to that kind of situation again.
You OK?

speaking as someone who was in an enormous amount of debt (especially for someone my age - I was 18 when it started) I think it can very easily get out of hand and it gets you waaaaay down...I'm lucky because I'm in no debt now and haven't been for some time but that's because I filed for bankruptcy in 2000. I was in a huge downward spiral both financially and emotionally and saw no other way out of it...

No, Im fine. Its my (ex) housemate. She got evicted today but the crux of it is, she's about 8 grand in debt and she's only 22. I think in her case she's a deceitful, compulsive and greedy liar without self awareness. I feel sorry for her because of her financial situation though. Its a whole horrible mess.

Half of it doesn't have anything to do with her debt so Im not jumping to conclusions. She has lied constantly.

I don't know. I've never been that far in debt. Probably a combo of lack of self-control, possibly self-esteem issues and a smidgen of naivete (or however that's spelled).

Once upon a time I worked in collections. I would call people and tell them to pay their bill. neutral It wasn't the most fun job but the hours were really flexible and the pay was good. Within about 30 seconds of the call I could determine that they were in one of 3 situations, either young and/or naive (didn't know any better, didn't understand credit well, etc.), just didn't care, or had a serious financial problem stemming from loss of job, medical problem or a divorce.

Mate the problem is often not facing up to it. Lets be honest 8 grand is not masses these days. She could borrow that for about 150 a month and pay it back but often people won't face it and ignore the letters. Maybe she is just real scared

I think that's the bottom of line of it really. She seems to have just constantly borrowed and I think it can just escalate and spiral out of control.

Well all you can do is hope that she sees sense and sorts herself out because otherwise she will always be running from creditors

I hope so but it would appear she hasn't faced up to it. On the face of it and from the way she has been acting it would appear she's greedy but I think to some extent it may be something that runs deeper.

$8000 in debt is nothing.

At the moment I have about $1.25 Million in debt. I kid you not.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
