Comes out of nowhere the way Hemingway must have at the time.
Always figured he'd go out in a motorcycle crash, or overdose, or simply old age. I still can't get over it.

Why is it always the ones we appreciate? The ones we need? People everyone hates almost never go out like that...

Hunter was an inspiration to me (check my avatar) - a warrior and a champion of humor in age of victims, cowards and fear - who for some reason opted for the coward's way out in the end. My first reaction when I read this was "he didn't seem like the type". He seemed too fearless and passionate.

It saddens and angers me greatly to know that someone I admired so much when out in such a selfish way.

He was needed now more than ever, and they long ago lost the blueprint to create more like him.

I will miss him and his work terribly.

Selah.

I thought of you last night when I heard the news! your avatar was always one of my favorites here and hunter as one of my fave authors!!! I thought the same thing ..... he was so fearless and suicide seemed like something that a person who was miserable would do like Kurt Cobain not HT... I never doubt any possibilties .... you never know if he pissed off a certain politician with his opinions or statements Perhaps someone had the power to eliminate him plus make it look like he did it too himself....

That was actually the first thing I thought of.

Case

This is an obit for Thompson that I wrote in this week's edition of the paper that I'm the editor of...

Hunter S. Thompson
1937-2005

When Hunter S. Thompson came face to face with that Great Gonzo in the sky, he probably said something like, "You’ve got some serious explaining to do, man."
Of course, so does Thompson.
Thompson, 67, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound last Sunday. No note, no nothing. It simply appears that the author who coined the phrase ‘fear and loathing’ acted on a desperate whim to escape those forces.
Hunter, you picked a hell of a time to check out. We needed you. Now more than ever. Your books "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Hell’s Angels" are read, analyzed and argued over like literary Shrouds of Turin, cementing your legend as one of the most important writers of the last 40 years. You almost single-handedly put Rolling Stone on the map and not since William Burroughs has a writer so thoroughly skull-f_ _ _ ed the English language.
Hunter, we can’t forgive you for checking out on us prematurely. We just hope that you’re in a happier place, where the Wild Turkey never stops flowing and that you have a Big Red Shark to transport you all over this foul universe.
Here's to you, Doctor. May Freak Power forever reign.
