What do you love? A church around the corner from where I live always has the most thought-provoking messages on its marquis. This week it says, "We are shaped and fashioned by what we love."
I'm curious, then, what do you love? And how does it shape you? [Edited 2/15/05 19:40pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Good question...
Taking specific people out of the answers, I'd say I love... Family Nature Art/Creativity How do these things shape me??...I think a lot of it centers around feeling connected (to other people, to everything around me, to something bigger than myself), loved (again by other people, and by God)...and appreciative (feeling as if I've been given so much to surround myself within my life, both in terms of the souls I'm blessed to share time with and the environment I've been given to live within). I think these three things have helped shape me into a pretty calm and peaceful person...there have been other experiences/events which have helped push me in that direction as well, but those three things have been consistently the things I love throughout my life..

Thanks, Byron. You actually come across exactly as you describe yourself... even via cyberspace. I guess it follows if you love beautiful things, they rub off. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Taking specific people out of the answers, I'd say I love... Family Nature Art/Creativity How do these things shape me??...I Yes, I agree - it's a really good question. My first thoughts were family and nature too, strangely enough, so I tried to think of a third and my third answer would be love itself. To me, love breeds compassion, kindness, appreciation, empathy and understanding amongst other things. I feel grateful that we are allowed to experience such a strong emotion within our lives. It allows me to experience life more fully and forgive more easily. It stops me from saying things in haste, to family and friends, that I would otherwise regret. I live a more enriched life. It's what strings all the happy things that happen in my life together. The unseen bit. I'm fairly new to it, to really allowing the "connectedness" that Byron mentions to permeate my life, so perhaps this makes no sense to anyone other than me. But being in love with love has allowed so many good things to happen to me and taken me into so many new directions that I have to acknowledge that my life is better when I allow myself to love the people and things around me than when I am indifferent or mistrustful.

I love little babies (that's my hormones talking!) especially my own. I can just look at them forever. When I am with my kids and they are telling me stuff - 3 and 4 year old wisdom - I am just marvelling at God's creation. I get the same thing when I'm somewhere spectacular like Iguazu - it's too awesome to put into words, I just love that!

Aside from my wife, kid and sense of God, I think the things I love most are (in no particular order)...
Beauty Knowledge Justice Self-Determination The combination of these things is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they lend themselves to truly filling moments of inspiration and self-guided abandon in things sublime. They motivate me, and there's rarely time to be earnestly bored or not engaged in something. On the other hand, it's very easy to succumb to idealism -- and, consequently, horrible desolation amid the recognition that the height of aesthetics, knowledge, justice, etc. aren't always fulfilled in this world. ...Geez I sound pretentious.
