what are the pros and cons of being/getting married? me and my boyfriend have been together for 9 years. we have 3 sons together. i don't know what we're waiting for. we know eachother like a book and we are very happy. what are the pros and cons of marriage? i'm a skeptic and my parents are divorced so i tend to not expect things to last while his parents have been together for 33 years. If you're happy together the way it is, why risk it by change?

You are married now minus the literal vow. Why would you fear change with the vow? You live with your children as married.

thats true, but i'm thinking of all the legal stuff or benefits that comes with it as well. are there any? i'm not planning on getting married soon, its just a thought.

There arn't many legal benefits at all these days. You are married now save for the fact that you dont have a licence. I wouldnt recommend marriage to someone who has been in a defacto relationship so long. Why change what works? When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

It depends on why you're getting married...

I think that even though for both of you the change will just be signing up papers, there's much more to it as I see it.
But not being married, any one of you can just leave. And each day you appreciate your artner being with you and staying with you. Once there's a legal document that states you're married, the "chase" is over, and the appreciation slowly fades. In other words, right now you treat each other as lovers, and changing the status legally can chane the attitude too. Of course, this changes from one person to another.

[Edited 2/13/05 17:30pm] I agree with Heavenly ... if a thing ain't broke, don't try to fix it ... although sometimes there can be tax advantages to getting married ... that's the only real advantage I can see these days.
