the house that i lived in when i first moved to this city was horribly managed.... i dealt with plumbing problems that took almost 6 months to repair, brown recluse spiders comming out of the walls, weapons of the landlords being stored on my property (he had them in a garage out back, the kids found the gun), amoung other things... so, i fought him, got out of the lease, and live in a much better place now

however, one of the biggest problems is my water at the old house... he owned the property next door to mine, the water pipe broke and they were unable to get water through to the house anymore. so, i came home one day and there was a hose connecting our homes... when i asked about it, he said i was just balancing the water pressure for them - something stupid like that.. this continued for about 6 months, he said he would be there to fix the problem, but never got around to it...

well, it turns out that i was infact supplying all water to that home... it was never fixed until i moved out. heres the deal... since we cannot determine who used what water, i have opted not to pay that bill until he does something about it.. he has never done anything about it, and now, my 'covered' time with the water where i currently live is over, and i need to have the water turned on in my name.. should i pay the bill or go to court and fight ??? if i fight, how much do you think he should have to pay ???

See a lawyer and find out what your rights are, protect yourself so you don't end up with a headache. Maybe he/she can settle it for you, at least the lawyer will be looking out for your best interest.

Hopefully that landlord does not fuck with your credit.

Your lawyer can ask for costs and the landlord paying if any $$ you feel owed. It will be up to the judge to come to a fair decision.

A Birch Street landlord was arrested Sept. 3 for allegedly stealing electricity from the United Illuminating Company.
Detective Sgt. Michael Madden reported that Michael Fiore, 32, of 15 Birch St., was charged with larceny in the sixth degree and criminal mischief in the third degree.
Fiore allegedly tapped into his tenants' electricity lines because his had been shut off earlier.
The tenants complained about their high bills each month and called UI who sent repairmen to check.
They reportedly found the line tapped and repaired it. Police reportedly noticed lights on in Fiore's apartment and discovered he allegedly had again tapped into his tenants' lines.
Madden said he expected more charges to be filed and estimated the theft of power cost at about $1,500 over the past year.

what state are you in? your rights are going to be determined by state law..

if your in california, if your lease doesnt stipulate which utilities you have to pay for you are protected by state law and the landlord has to pay for water and garbage..

You should ask the water company whether they can tell you the average water demand rate a family of your size is expected to use. That's a good starting point to figure out how much he stole.

I really urge you to contact a renters right organization and get connected to a lawyer. Not only to protect yourself but to get this slumlord shut down.

i went all through the state codes when i attacked him the first time and got out of my lease... and you are right, there is a wealth of information there

but, the water in this case, along with the gas for that matter, were on me to pay (that was in my lease), they were both in my name, and since he used them without my permission, its stepped out of the bounds of landlord/tenant and more into the criminal part i think.

what makes me most angry is that i believe he did it because he saw a single mom, perhaps not a lot of money, doing her best to support 2 children... im easy enough to get along with, but he took my advantage of my kindness - and then took advantage of me
