In Detroit today is Paczki day...Paczki are huge, jelly or custard-filled Polish doughnuts that are a Fat Tuesday treat only! They have about 450 calories a piece!

Paczki Day

Paczki (punch-key) Day is the feast of plenty before the Lenten fast begins. It is the last day of gaiety in Karnawal time, the period between Christmas and Lent. This is the time for sleigh parties called Kulig. To mark the last moments of excess before the austerity of Lenten sacrifice, Polish Roman Catholics celebrate Paczki Day.

On this day the traditional deep fried pastries (something like jelly doughnuts) are enjoyed throughout the world's Polonias. This joyous activity precedes the Gorzkie Zale (lamentation services) of Lent in Polonian churches. In Poland, Paczki Day takes place the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, called Tlusty Czwartek (Fat Thursday). Long lines form in front of the bakeries in Polonia, and millions of Paczki are sold.

In United States Polonia, Paczki Day takes place the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, traditionally called Fat Tuesday in Carnival. Polish American bakeries also supply Paczki in the hundreds of thousands that day. Often in American Polonia, Paczki Day is celebrated with polka dances. In Roman Catholic grammar schools throughout American Polonia, children enjoy Paczki at school on that day.

Are you planning to give up anything for Lent?

Good morning, Apples and Happy Fat Tuesday to you!
We have a tradition here in Philly, although I don't participate in it, it just gets too wild.
We have a bar called "Fat Tuesday." It specializes in frozen drinks and they have a wide variety from something simple like a margarita to something called High Octane, which has grain alcohol, as do quite a few of them. Even the Long Island Iced Tea is frozen.
The drinks have the texture of a Slurpee and yes they are GOOD.
Anyway, every Fat Tuesday, they get absolutely wild in there, so wild that they close early now, but they still line up before the bar opens.
I always wanted to go to Mardi Gras, even if it is majorly crowded. I'll get there soon, I don't have an excuse for not finding a hotel. One of my aunts lives there!

Happy Paczki Day!! I just may eat one of these today. Afterall, I dotn want to be a party pooper. Im going to stop by Hamtramck (Detroit enclave) today and pick some up. Here is where you can find Hamtramck.

Yeah Apple! One year we went to the Palace Bakery and there was a line running outside on Jos Compau. It must have taken 2 hours for us to get our Paczkis. But hey, it was worth it!

I didn't even realize it was Paczki Day. I didn't see the news or anything and they usaully make it a big deal. I kind of like the paczki but maybe I'll see if their still making them tommorrow cause I'm getting Chinesse for dinner tonight...screw the donuts.
