I think you are doing the right thing by moving out of that place. Dont let them bully you into paying rent til it's re-leased. Get on the offensive and tell them straight out that you dont expect any shit about this or you will raise hell about the state of their building. Thanks. I'm not always very good at asserting myself but this time I've really had it. I found the phone number for my county's health department and I'm going to call them tomorrow and get their thoughts on this situation. My mom told me to do it anonymously for now just to get some more info and ammunition to use when I speak with my building's office again and I honestly don't think, if I mention getting the health inspector or whoever it would be, involved in this that the office will give me much difficulty in letting me out of my lease. They'll probably be glad to get rid of me.

Q: What are the symptoms of exposure to mold? A: Effects from exposure to toxic mold can result in any of the following symptoms: • headaches • memory loss • problems focusing or concentrating • chronic fatigue • nose and throat irritation • persistent cold-like symptoms • burning, itching or watering eyes • dizziness • nausea • tremors • heart palpitations • shortness of breath (during mild exertion) • exhaustion after routine activity • serious swelling in legs, ankles, feet • serious swelling in torso or stomach • prolonged muscle cramps and joint pain • sensitivity to odors • cancer • women who are pregnant could experience multiple problems, even miscarriages. ----- http://www.thefloodco.com/page5.html POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF MOLD EXPOSURE Eye irritation/watering Runny nose Coughing Sinus pressure Headache Throat irritation Hoarseness of voice Tightness/burning of chest Increased frequency or severity of asthma Loss of concentration/focus Malaise Recurrent fever Dizziness Nausea Often mimics Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Nose bleeds/other bleeding there are quite a few of your symptoms listed here... i am not a lawyer, though, i wish i woulda been one i find great excitement out of looking for things like this... im always out for the lil guys in life anyway, you need to copy some of these papers.... do you know the folks downstairs ? can you ask them if you can take pictures, that will really help go to the office with your concerns, and your papers, tell them that the most important thing is that you are not counted against for your credit. if necessary, get copies of your medical records and have those handy... but, dont give to much info to them, as you may eventually end up in court behind this.... again, im not a lawyer, but it sure sounds to me like you have a perfect reason to be upset O. M. G. I can't believe how many symptoms on there I **HAVE**. One doctor last year even suggested to me about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome because he couldn't really pinpoint anything! I'm starting to see things fall into some kind of sense now, however.. Thank you SO MUCH for finding that info and posting it here for me, nakedpianoplayer. I appreciate it so much. YOu are WONDERFUL! As for the people downstairs, it's this lady and her two teenage daughters and they've been in so much trouble in the past year (loud parties, underage drinking, etc) with this building that they're currently on their final warning before eviction so I don't know how helpful they'd be. they kind of want to keep a low profile as much as they can now. According to the office, the molded, mildewed wall downstairs has already been completely replaced and fully cleaned of mold - at least that's what the office says to me - so I don't know what further I can do or document regarding that in particular. However, I DO truly believe that mold is still an issue here in this building in many other places, considering all the water stains, leaks, etc that are around, and who knows what behind the walls and in/under the carpet. I know I"m making this building out to seem some kind of real slum, but when a you first look at it, it does looks to be a nice place to live. It's only after a person actually lives here awhile that they discover all the issues such as vermin, mold, crummy management, loud neighbors. Thanks again for finding this info. I appreciate it so much that you took the time to do that for me.

Okay, I haven't read the whole thread for a while, but caught the end here...there are plenty of buildings that aren't slums, that are taken care of for the most part, but still have the mold and such that result in, and I quote "sick building syndrome". This is a documented illness, my doctor told me of it, actually, and whole mold thing is really a serious issue.
You will find a lot on the net about it.

no problem sweetie
i wish you well with this.... remember, dont blow your secret all at once, remember to have SOME of this held back for legal issues... all you need to say at this point is that they need to fix the problem you are having, give them that in writing, make a copy for yourself, and make the time limit reasonable. if they choose not to do that, it is my understanding that you have every legal ground to stand on check with your local lawyers to make sure, i dont want to see you get yourself into trouble - because, i really have no idea what im talking about but, i just hate to see the little guys get hurt out there be safe, take care, and fight ! Snowqueen...get out of there...that place is a total mold trap and you can even get sicker. ALLL of what naked said do do do! that place is going to try to bilk you out of your money...don't let them. you pay no more. I would certainly call 2 people...health inspectors...board of health. even if to just make a complaint. And call rent control services (or what ever service that helps out tenants in your area) in your area...if you have them. They can give you the right info you need so you don't get stuck with anything legal. You are in the right... not them. And if you have one or know one or whatever...think about talking to a lawyer. This can be something that really gets out of hand depending on the landlord...might be looking for someone to pin the mold on...not trying to scare ya...but just sayin. I live in san francisco, I've heard about all kinds of crazy schemes. BTW...that stuff you are smelling could even be worse than a squirrel. who knows what it is. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I'm really late reading this but, I when you said you were getting sick I was going to suggest it might be moldy walls and such. Bite the bullet if you can and move. When you write the letter explaining why your moving include the paragraph the other orger posted when you were complaining about the rodents along with the medical problems you've been having. Tell these jokers that it's a violation of your lease. Just for good measure you should state the tenant rights portion of your lease and include your state's law regarding the same to back you up. I had to do the same thing because of rodents in an apartment I was renting about ten years ago. I moved in and found that rodents were in the walls and ceilings. I had signed a three year lease. I was was there three months. I threatened to take the f*ckers to court and the only thing I lost was my security deposit. I was fine with that because I told them to use that to pay my last month's rent. Hell, I even had to live with my mom for about a month before I found a new place because I just couldn't stand being there. Good luck. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
