Yep, with soap. Just fill the sink with warm water and a little dish soap. I asked my boss about this (she's a biologist) and she said you should wash everything, even fruits like oranges because most of the time you peel and eat right away...unless you peel and then wash your hands good and then eat them. If you just rinse it's not getting rid of the sometimes harmful chemicals on them. I was shocked too...but it makes sense.

nod I use some stuff called Fit to wash my produce. It's made specifically for it.

Did you know that you can make fruit ripen quickly by placing ripe fruit next to under-ripe fruit? It doesn't have to be the same fruit either. You could place a ripe tomato in a bowl of bananas and it would make them ripen quicker. nod

Would something like an orange be protected by its thick skin, which we don't eat anyway??... hmmm

Thanks for the scoop, Carrie. I never realized that even fruit that has a peel (like oranges) may still have those nasty pesticides/chemicals on them. I've got some oranges in the fridge that I need to wash before I even eat them.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Don't forget to wash all your fruit with soap and water. Recently there was salmonella (I know the spelling is wrong) poisoning on some fruit, can't remember what it was though. You should wash everything, even oranges...they spray fruit with so many chemicals now.
[Edited 1/28/05 12:22pm]

Salmonella is only harmful to small kids and the elderly

Well that's nice to know but just because something is natural doesn't make it safe at all.
It's probably fine... I was more making a point of how these things seem to turn out in general.

Cool... smile I bought a few oranges the other day, and while trying to peel them the skin just would NOT come off...all the oranges I'd bought before peeled very easily, and the oranges themselves were great. nod So, I wasn't sure why this was happening, plus the oranges weren't as sweet this time.. confused But they looked the same as the others I had bought in the past (or so I thought)... hmmm

Also, do I actually pull a grape off of the stem to see how tightly connected it is??... hmmm

giggle You're so cute smile

Well...I've found that the sweetest oranges have the thickest skins...so next time you're at the store really feel them...if you squeeze a bit and feel it has a thin skin...pass it up...look for the ones that have the thick skin.

I tried this over the weekend...and I couldn't tell at all if the skin was thin, thick, or somewhere in between... neutral ...So I just went for color. lol

lol If you squeeze the fruit a little bit you can tell...the ones with the thicker skins are less squishy and have more of a deeply dimpled skin. You've just got to get the hang of it smile hug

Ask the produce manager if you could have a sample...

Or, go to one of those road side fruit stands.. They have samples galore.

It's rather disturbing the amount of crap we humans require...in order to give something (or someone) value...corporations understand the amount of value we give the visual...and they play off that knowledge in a million different ways. We can't expect them to change their stripes, until we ourselves learn to change ours.

I'm actually designing some artwork for the Brown Cancer Center Program, and fruit needs to be part of the design somehow...they're promoting fruits and their antioxidant properties, or something like that...I might have to go to the store and buy some more fruit to photograph...and of course to eat afterwards.. thumbs up!
