The movie "City of God" (aka "Cidade de Deus") If you haven't had the chance to see this movie, DO IT!!! I just watched it last night and it's an amazing movie! It's in Portuguese with English subtitles but it's well worth having to spend a little extra time reading!
It's about a group of kids growing up in Rio de Janeiro and the struggles they go through living in poverty, etc...Some resort to crime, some try to escape it. I would highly, highly recommend watching it. http://www.imdb.com/title...fc=1;ft=20

That is a brilliant and, sadly, overlooked film. Really powerful, and the cinematography was truly some of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous I've seen in a long while.

This movie is becoming the new "Donnie Darko" around here... About once every two months somebody new starts up a thread in honor of this amazing movie, just like what used to happen with Donnie Darko... (I'm one of the ones who started up a "City Of God" thread... )
And I completely agree...it's stunning. And mg, does it ever show how the power of photography can change someone's life, just by being able to capture the reality and share what they see thru their own perspective, their own eyes. I love that the very last words said in the movie are "I forgot to say...my name isn't Rocket anymore. I'm now Wilson Rodriguez...photographer." And the movie is a true story...

Maybe this is where I've heard about it.... I dunno...I thought I had just been recommended it by netflix....regardless, it's fantastic!

the movie.
But I had no idea Brazil was so violent. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I agree. I rented this movie 2-3 days ago, and in the middle I just paused it and said to my wife "this movie is fucking amazing!". The extra documentary style material is very compelling too. *****************************************

'Cidade de deus' is a harsh, strong and beautiful movie. Caralho! Meu nome é Zé Pequeno! 'Donnie Darko' is as deep compared to masterpieces as theJames Redfield-shit was compared to classic philosophers! IMHO of course !

Great movie.
So sad it's based on a true story... All the violence, drugs, children without a future ...

They're both great in their own ways...one is a decades-old true story told in an extraordinarily invigorating, violent, humorous and profound way...the other is a grab-bag of seemingly thousands of different genres and past films which somehow, some way works while at the same time re-inventing the "teen comedy". Besides, Calhoun and I have a running dialogue about Donnie Darko..lol..so it's all good.

I know. Just laughing a bit. 'Donnie Darko' was not that bad but I really don't understand the hype. I liked the irony and the sound-track and it was an agreeable film, but no more than that, to me of course. Cidade de Deus broke my heart in pieces. And the soundtrack was even better, so funky at times ! Besides, Calhoun and I have a running dialogue about Donnie Darko..lol..so it's all good. It is all good, that's for sure!
