I'm not sure what I think about it. For one, some kids can't afford to buy uniforms. Also some people look very bad in uniforms. But, then again, it eliminates some of the bad signs of class. Everybody looks the same, nobody looks richer or poorer according to their clothes. Also it makes sure nobody comes to school with nasty looking tasteless clothes. I thinks so too. Uniforms can be expensive initially but not wearing one can be even more so. I didn't mind wearing it in fact at least I didn't have to decide every morning what I was going to wear for that day and if it was cool etc. we used to have a day in school now and again when we were able to come in with no uniform...everyone was at pains as to what they were going to wear Yup, what Heavenly said is correct- dat is da actual reason why some schools prefer school uniform!! Ofcourse when you're AT school- first time u wear da uniform it's a bit exciting, then after a while you're thinkin it'z da most uncool thing to be wearing!! Damn it, i used to roll my skirt up and do different funky ass hair dos everyday just so i didnt feel plain and da same 2 other galz. Alotta girlz did dat kinda thing though- and our school was so strict in as far as uniform was concerned!! Casual days rocked...but i never knew what 2 wear- hence da uniform being not such a bad idea No hablo espanol,no!
Pero hablo ingles..ssii muy muy bien... "Come into my world..." Missy Quote of da Month: "yeah, sure, that's cool...wait WHAT?! "

I never wore a uniform.. Would have been alot easier, and less competition in the fashion sense. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^

i had 2 wear uniforms because i went 2 a private school (1st-7th grade) and i think that they are beneficial because (as many have suggested) there is less competition fashion wise. At the time though, everybody hated the uniforms and looked forward to "free dress" days.
the worst part of the uniform was the see-through blouse that we girls had to wear...i hated having 2 get up every morning and iron those stupid pieces of shit "...took my sex and my money...took all my self esteem...had the nerve 2 think it was funny...i never knew a bitch so mean"

However, as far as I know and correct me if I'm wrong, in the States they dont. Do you think wearing a Uniform is important, or doesn't matter?
Does it help in terms of promoting a sense of identity or belonging, or do you think it's better for the child to not wear a uniform? Your views!!! [Edited 1/27/05 2:45am] Hmmm...post a pic of you in a school uniform and I'll be better able to offer an opinion.

[Edited 1/27/05 2:45am] some schools in the US do require uniforms. i see both sides; uniforms are good because they reduce competition in the 'looks' department among teens, at a time when meqningless criteria of this type can make or break a child's social standing. uniforms are bad because they stifle independent self-expression uniforms can be counter productive to self expression as carrie stated too but I think that perhaps it's also important to enable a kid to feel that they dont stand out from the crowd for the wrong reasons, i.e not being able to afford fashionable clothes or having to wear the clothes your mum picks out for you. which were always COMPLETELY different to the clothes you wanted to wear.
