The Ipod and headphones

I don't have an ipod, but everyone i see with it has those little ear buds, which i hate. I like big headphones....like the ones they had in schhol when you had to listen to records or the ones they have at the musuem...or the ones dj's wear. Is the ipod jack universal, if so why do people insist on wearing those small headphones? music

I believe the jack is universal. I hope so, those in-earphones probably suck.

I too love those big headphones, though I think the choose the smaller ones because they more descrete.

I bought those in-ear-phones because I thought they look cool and they actually stick in your ear, instead of the regular ones that keep falling out of your ear all the time..... And guess what? The sound is fucking half as loud!!! It totally pissed me of, the volume was just totally gone!
So I returned them and bought me some Sony ones.....same story! I don't know why, buy my experience is that the regular ones provide the best sound!

Anyone else had this experience?

The iPod phones are horrible. I tossed them immediately. You can use any phones with a 1/8" jack.

Well, as a soundman, I usually check the impedence on headphones, and make sure they'll be loud enough, yet still fit the tech requirement for the machine. biggrin

Huh, maybe you can help me. Can I run an 8 ohm extension cab into an amp with a 4 ohm min load?

I see what you're getting at but I thought iPod would deliver constant sound-quality!

Yup, I got the same ones from Sony, I had them send to me from Japan for they were cheaper there (?)
The sound quality is good but the volume SUCKS !!
I'm back on my I-pod ones but I'm looking for alternatives...

lol, it's not Apple that is screwing you over, it's your lack of technical knowldge that makes you buy the wrong accesories.
Same as you won't buy Bus tires for your Mini Minor, same goes for headphones. You need headphone with less impedence, to fit the iPod.

Sure, I don't know jackshit about the technology. All I know that the iPod came with headphones that give me satifying soundquality and volume. Therefore I expect that, when I buy headphones of the same brand, these qualities are no less! So Apple is screwing me over!

Well, the might look the same, but obviously they're not the same brand.
I'm guessing Apple decided to save on batteries by using an amplifier that has lower output, thus requiring headphones with lower impedence.
I also once bought headphones of Sony, that cost me about $100+, and the volume sucked. Now I use headphones that cost me 1/3 the price and the volume is 3 times as loud.
Just like every other thing you buy, make sure it fits what you're looking for, not just by size. Size doesn't matter in this case wink (thank god)

I find most people stick with the white headphones, not because of sound quality, but as a status symbol ("Hey! Look at me everybody, I have an IPod!")

Fuckin' Sheep! mad

Don't be a corporate slave. Ditch the crappy white headphones, be original and get urself a decent quality set that are comfortable and sound good to YOUR ears.

The top of the line Sony in-ear ones are the only in-ears I ever liked. That was about a year ago before I lost them. sad

Only in-ear phones that came close to proper phones.

blah blah blah.....bunch of crap! You must have a very short dick if you think you can impress people with your white headphones. iPod comes with the whities and they happen to be good. They are part of the iPod design-line. The only thing I have against them is that they sometimes don't stick to my ears very well while skiing or riding my bike. I've tried other ones and they sound quality is just not as good, so I'll stick to the original ones. I am happy to be able to afford my iPod, next to my camera it is the best gadget I've bought over the last two years. Your corporate-slave argument is bullshit!

not from experience, but after reading about it on 'the Internets', it seems that most people simply don't put those in right. You really have to push them in deep so they "seal off" your ear canal. Also, since ears have different chapes, not all brands will fit every ear, or will complete seal of the ear (you might even want to try a different size for each ear). Apparently, once you get the trick, the sound quality (and loudness) is absolutely top notch. Hope that helps. cool

no no no! disbelief I know how to stuff my ears with earphones....also these ones! I am sure that the quality is ok, just the volume-output was definitely lower! Try it and tell me about it, Sus!

The way these work is you really have to jam them in your ear and the rubber "gasket" (grey thing) creates a seal and that's the only way you actually get any lows out of them. I had a pair and I loved them but they stopped working because of ear wax (gross) build-up.

The jack works with any 1/8 jack but I don't want to run on a treadmill with cans on my head, falling off every five minutes.

I spent a little more money and bought (at the apple store) a pair of Sure headphones. They have an "ear wax guard" that goes overtope the sound hole and then a bunch of different sized foam things that fit inside your ears. They're the best out of the bunch.

The headphones that came with my iPod SUCKED. They were the ones pictured in the beginning of the thread. The sound was awful and they kept coming out of my ears.
