rumor has it, Ohioans speak english the best, with no accents. And supposedly, people studying to be news anchors, try to mimic our way of speaking because its so neutral. That is, until you hit the rural areas, then it becomes straight up hillbilly...

Yet another reason to hate Ohio. We're like the lukewarm tap water of the entire world!!! disbelief

I have the typical Ohio (lack of) American English accent, but because I'm 1) naturally rather nasal; 2) totally a suburban baby; and 3) black, I come off a bit more... er... "erudite" than I actually am. I think it's a psychological dissonance thing mostly: When people see me, they probably expect me to sound like, say, Will Smith. But when I open my mouth, I sound more like Niles Crane. lol

I sound a bit Californian (like a Surfer trying to grow up).
If U've heard Anderson Cooper talk, that's prety much what I sound like.

Of course, becuase I lived in Alabama for 8 years, I can also do a Southern Draw.

And I also do one kick ass EngRish accent. http://www.engrish.com
For obvious reasons.

I'm told it's basically a Midwestern non-accent, with a hint of New England (where I was born). But when it comes to word choices and pronunication, my New England roots are more obvious. For example, a carbonated soft drink is always "soda," not "pop." And I pronounce the word "aunt" like awnt, not ant.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

Though I've lived in BC since I was six, and before that lived in Edmonton, I have a distinctly small Prairie-town accent. If anyone's seen "Corner Gas", that's how I talk.

wave another Ohoian here, but I do have a bit of a hillybilly accent, and sometimes catch myself saying certain 'phrases' that are rather embarassing

I don't really have one, however, I used to. I used to have a South Philly/South Jersey accent, but I stopped speaking that way during my college years. You can sometimes hear it if I'm really mad. I can still understand So. PHilly and So. Jersey accents - I don't need an interpretation like a lot of people do. giggle

Its amusing to hear an American say they dont really have an accent! Every American has an accent... There is no such thing as a neutral accent or non-accent... If anyone can attempt to say they have no accent, then by default they would have to be an English accented person (ie from England). But even the English cannot claim neutral accentdom as a scouser may sound neutral in Liverpool but not in London, and vice versa...

But an American, no matter where you are from and how you speak believe me, you have an accent. Even your newsreaders have very American accents...

As for me? Im from London so I have an Australian accent...

Bahstin! biggrin

Go pahk tha cah in hahvad yahd!

I've been told my accent really comes out when I'm angry. I try to pronounce my "r's" though because I think people sound like idiots when they don't. Rhode Island has a worse accent and they say "uge" instead of "huge", it annoys me! mad
