ive just killed somebody............. i forget that when administering adenisone for a svt ,the resulting drug can often cause a 6 - 12 second asystole

See, this is the thing. People think docs/nurses should be above error, and that's impossible. Lots of people are harmed by medical errors, and it's amazing the numbers aren't higher.
Think about the little mistakes here and there that you've made in your job. Imagine if half of them -- even the itty bitty ones -- could have killed somebody. Sucks, right? When I was doing veterinary nursing, I would call in sick if I wasn't sure I could be mentally THERE that day, even if I was going to get in trouble. . .just not worth it. The one time I ever administered the wrong drug (butorphanol instead of buprenorphine; identical bottles, long b-words. . .  ) I was pretty sleep deprived, and I swore never again. . . thankfully, those are similar drugs with simiar safe dosing ranges, but. . .it definately made me think about all of the people practicing medicine, and how much pressure they are under. | |
