It's a movie that matronly women will like, from what I've read. Kind of campy - a biopic about some icon lost in the dustbin of history. You can be forgiven for not knowing about it - most people don't.

Consensus seems to be that she doesn't deserve it for this role.

im wondering if Moreno or Staunton have a chance for an upset..I just dont see Swank getting a second oscar so quickly...Your looking at Fields, Hepburn, Foster and a few others getting double lead female wins...Is Swank really in that category?

I really think Swank's performances in both films stand beside the other actresses you mentioned. They've already become two of my favorite performances of all-time. But she really struggled early in her career (meaning, she took a lot of bad, bad roles), and truly worked her way to the top of her game. That said, I'm not a member of the academy, I don't play favorites, and I don't do lifetime achievement awards. They won't give it to Swank. I will he shocked if she wins. Happy, but truly shocked.

I would be happy with an upset win by Staunton. As much as I loved Moreno in the film and I was pulling for her nomination, I don't think she stands much of a chance.

umm yes...but when discussing a fims relevance you cant go on your own opinion to gauge how a film has resonated with the public...rottentomatoes, box office numbers and critical responce are all factors in determining the films impact...

you know that, you aint gotta go for a lowblow....but u claimed the film was recieved with mixed critical responce....which wasnt true....it was recieveed poorly by critics.....i still love you.. hug kisses

i liked Catwoman..Does that mean I can claim it was recieved by mixed responce from critics?

wink

Sorry, I missed this post. I'm just not going to agree with you, nor you with me, and I'm not gonna split hairs over what percentage means critics liked or disliked a film. I'm saying it had it's supporters critically and named them. I don't frequent Rotten Tomatoes, so I don't know what their numbers are or what they mean.

You can love, hug and kiss me all you want, but the true FACT in all of this is that if you liked Catwoman you truly are braver than I. I've yet to even muster up the desire to see it. But I have a full appreciation for bad cinema, so I may just end up liking it as well. wink

are you fucking kidding me? you are going to post a picture of her role on 90210 as proof she isn't good enough to win? Why don't you post a pic of Jamie Foxx when he was IN LIVING COLOR! (And I'm sure you will)

I just watched it two nights ago. It was gut wrenching in a subtle way. I think it was a very subtle but effective performance. It almost felt like a documentary

Great, now I have 10 more movies to catch up on.....where to find the time....

how can anyone make these calls without seeing all the films? easy...this is a sport doll.....its easy to follow the political trends of this awards...you honestly dont think that these things are voted on based on the merits of the performances, do you?

there is validity in stating that Swank has not achieved the level of success/respect/achievement that other double oscar winners have.....i dont need to see the films to understand this....just like you didnt need to see Rusell Crowe was *not* going to win a second Oscar for A Beautiful Mind (which was much more deserved then his Gladiator performance)....Most people said Denzel won it because he was black...No, Rusell wasnt liked enough to win back to back oscars....and Denzel benefited from this since no other nominee was as worthy as these two...

so call my comments ridiculous.... shrug im just having fun..... note im not calling your comments out or anyone elses...just sharing what i notice...

I wish that politics wasn't involved in all of this. In a perfect world..... Some performances just cannot be compared.

Did anybody see Vera Drake. I'm a big fan of Imelda Staunton. I loved her in Peter's Friends and Sense and Sensibility.

umm, that was more of me having fun with this discussion..not everything has to be serious serious serious!! lol

but, if you run with the Hanks a lil bit more you will see my observation holds water...Hanks was riding hit after hit and was already well loved by Hollywood.....Swanks (like i mentioned in my previous posts) has flopped in everything but her two Oscar nominations....and she isnt regarded as Hollywood Royalty like Hanks was during his two wins (or Jody Foster who was the last female to win two oscars)....Thats why I think Benign is going to win this one..But if the film isnt seen by enough people im wondering if Vera Drake's Staunton will pull off an upset..I just dont see Swank doing it..Regardless of how well her performance was..

heck, if perfomance was all the mattered then they need to close shop and hand an apology to Bjork for not even nominating her for "dancer in the dark"..

I agree, Swank has had 2 great movie roles, does she really deserve another Oscar this early in her career? I mean shes a decent actor but I just dont think its right

The awards are (in theory anyway) for a single role - not for an accumulation of film roles. She's nominated for Million Dollar Baby alone - many people think she was great in that movie, so yes, she deserves it.

I think it's predistended that Swank gets it, despite the fact that EVERYTHING else she's done has went nowhere, and in some cases, would be terribly embarrassing if anyone remembered them ("The Core" for chirst sake!). Actually, you can give Swank some props for "Insomnia", even though she didn't have to be in it (it was all Pacino and Williams) as well as the highly acclaimed TV movie "Iron Jawed Angels". Thank you, IMDB. My point is, she's the favorite by far (Anette really doesn't have that much buzz, does she) so it is said, so it is done. With Crowe and Washington, you didn't know for sure. With Penn and Murrary last year, you didn't know for sure, but Penn was a safer bet. I think Swank will just be remembered for these two roles, nothing more, unless she gets her act together.

Politics will work for Swank...becuase they just plain hate Benning. I'd just kill myself if I were her! smile Could you imagine being a hardcore Anette Benning (could imagine if they exisist) and history is repeating itself like this again. Shit, Benning as short hair...she can be lesbain boxer (Ok, I haven't seen the movie, but come on!) or man trapped in a woman's body (not a lesbian, but close).

Anette Benning is...."Lezbo"!
Tagline:Line up the awards...she's finally beat Hilary Swank at her own game!

Still not on DVD (in America, anyway). Just criminal! I don't even think they released it on sell through video! I bought it online. I'm not sure how much I paid for it (probably around $20).

Actually, I just looked it up and it looks like a bare bones DVD for only $9.99 comes out next week! Can't wait!

And I liked "Scent of A Woman"....not so much "Color Of Money". The awards should be for preformances. Pacino should have had Oscars before that. Again, sometimes it's favorites/achievement (Penn), sometimes times performance (Theron) sometimes both (Foxx?).

And I agree, but I still argue that Penn's award was for that performance alone. He'd been winning awards for Mystic River and the Oscar talk began when the film premiered at Cannes in May 2003. It was definitely a long-time coming, but I think they gave it to him for his work in that film alone.

I prefered Bill Murrary. I didn't think that much of "Mystic River" (wouldn't dare see it again). And is it just me or did people seem to forget about that movie after "Million Dollar Baby", calling it, besides "Unforgiven", his other masterpiece. It's not like Clint always knocks them out of the park, eihter (he releases a movie a year, and most tend to do poorly or modestly).

but 21 Grams was not worthy of all the admiration...the timeline shifting and editing was to mask what would have been a boring and straightfoward story....

Jamie Foxx all the way for "Ray"! I haven't even seen the film but I believe he deserves it.

I've been a big fan of Jamie and it's great to see someone who has entertained you come up real big. He can give you a moving performance and then also make you laugh your ass off! He also sings really good and I can't wait to hear his album when it comes out.

I also hope that John Debney wins for best music score for The Passion Of The Christ because that score was so moving especially during the crucifxion scene. I feel the film deserves that award.
