Nothing too shocking, but I'm super happy Mike Leigh got a best director nominee. He's been overlooked for far too long. He hasn't a chance of winning, but glad he got the nom. I'd love to see Eastwood take that award.

Disappointing for me:
No Liam Neeson nomination for Kinsey. He was fantastic, and though I loved The Aviator, I'd gladly take DiCaprio's name off that leading actor list and replace it with Neeson's. No documentary nom for Michael Moore, but it's his own bloated ego's fault for not submitting it in that category. Annette Bening for a movie nobody liked and she will likely win. Grrr... Glad to see: Cate Blanchett and Morgan Freeman with supporting noms. Sadly, they're each in a category with a younger, newer "it" boy/girl. Clive Owen and Natalie Portman were each great, but I'd rather not see them win. Aviator scored 11 noms, but the little film that could, Million Dollar Baby scored 7.

Its Freeman's.....The one award to watch is going to be Supporting Actress....Blanchett is loved by the industry and she is playing Kate Hepburn (he most oscar wins ever)....while i havent seen The Aviator (i hate scorcesse's newer films) I hear she does such an awesome job of becoming Kate....but on the flipside this award tends to go to hot young ass...So Portman might just do it for her T&As... He chose not to submit it for documentary, thinking he had a shot at Best Picture. Catalina Sandino Moreno - Maria Full of Grace was one of my favorites and she was terrific! I'm still hoping for Hilary Swank, but I don't think either stands a chance, cuz they're gonna give the "long overdue" award to that bag Annette Bening.

No, he didn't submit for this category because he was trying to get PBS to run it before the election, which would disqualify the film for the nomination. He was, however, unable to get whatever company had the DVD rights to agree to let him put it on the tele beofre the DVD was released. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

As someone who doesn't watch scripted film anymore (with very few exceptions), all I can say is:

NATALIE PORTMAN: haven't seen the movie, but that girl is an excellent actress! She deserves the Oscar, and imho, deserved it a long time ago.
"The Sea Inside" for best foreign film....why? Because it's from SPAIN!!

Best picture? Why would he submit it for that? I guess it didn't hurt to try but he would have had a much better shot in the documentary category.

Ultimately, it lies on the shoulders of the disctributor, and if I'm not mistaken Lion's Gate was going to do so.

Alan Alda, huh? Where the fuck did that one come from?
At least Before Sunset got a screenplay nom, and that piece of shit Closer was not nominated for best picture or screenplay. I was hoping for an actress nomination for Julie Delpy, however. I guess Alan was the surprise, instead. [Edited 1/25/05 7:29am]
