Why? I always seem to find myself in situations with girls where this line is so applicable.....

and it is one of Pavement's best songs!

"I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts." - Quicksand, David Bowie

One of my absolute favorit lines because with all the shit that is going on in the world, your own personal demons, the struggle wether to believe or not... trying to somehow understand all this, find some sense in it, you cannot succeed. So trying too hard to find a truth behind it all will leave you lost, sunken in the quicksand of your thought.

Born with the moon in cancer
Choose her a name she will answer to
Call her green and the winters cannot fade her
Call her green for the children who’ve made her
Little green, be a gypsy dancer

From Joni Mitchell's Little Green.

Blue was the first Joni album I got as a gift from my first boyfriend Richard, who was totally wild about this particular album. Richard was a poetic wild-child and he loved hipping me to beat-poets and singer-songwriters like Joni.

Blue was certainly his fave and therefor also mine, as it made me fall in love with Joni's voice. Blue was the album that made me realise that the poetry I had written up til that point were really songs.

This particular line from the first verse of Little Green has that deep MOTHER feeling I always look for in everything. I always have been a moody person and I am drawn to anything that has a sense of longing and regret; it speaks out to me, calls to me.

In that sense, Blue is a deeply intuitive album, filled with opposite emotions. In many songs you hear the longing and regret I just spoke of, other songs breathe deviance, an open 'no regrets'-statement.

It is strange that in my first album review, I also refered to that 'mother'-feeling I got when listening to Little Green in particular, as later I found out this song tells of Joni's daughter, that she had given up for adoption.

star
Two other songs from this album have special meaning to me. First of those two is My Old Man. It's the song Richard loved most. Blue was our sunday morning (or often sunday afternoon) record. He would get up, get us some breakfast, while he played the record while he was making the toast. This song he would sing along to.

He’s my sunshine in the morning
He’s my fireworks at the end of the day
He’s the warmest chord I ever heard
Play that warm chord, play and stay baby
We don’t need no piece of paper
From the city hall
Keeping us tied and true

My old man
Keeping away my blues

To me, this song connects me to the days when love was care-free. The line from verse two I so dearly love signifies how I look upon 'marriage'. Union between two humans should be like this, not reinforced by religion or rules.
I picked verse two because of the 'warm chord'-reference. Doesn't it remind you of a certain Prince song, left off Sign "O" The Times?

star
Last line is from Blue itself;

Everybody’s saying that hell’s the hippest way to go
Well I don’t think so
But I’m gonna take a look around it though
which is beauty in it's entirety.

It's how I look at life.

"Surprisingly", she said, "there's no bitter bashing of things, no screaming in red-eyed pain...
only long, agonizing hours, days, years and the lesson that reality is a stubborn bitch that just won't change."

Actually, that's from me. boxed Of course I wouldn't compare me with any real songwriters, but I just think that line explains the feeling that you sometimes get, that there is no hope, no dreams, no way out, no way back to your love, no way to have a deceased person back (which is what happened in the actual song).

It might not really be good but it means quite a lot to me.

Learned to survive in your fictitious world,
Does what they think of you determine your worth?
If special's what you feel when you're with them,
Taken away you feel less-than again...
Janet, "You"

When I lick my lips I can taste your smileJanet, "Empty"

If you're all alone and a friend you need,
Like a river flows, you hurt and I'll bleed.
Janet, "Lonely"

Freeze this moment please, don't wanna get it outta my head.Janet, "SloLove"

When I feel that I don't belong, draw my strength from the words
when you said "Hey, it's about ya, baby. Look deeper inside ya, baby
Janet, "Together Again"

Everywhere I go, every smile I see I know you are there smiling back at me.
Dancing in moonlight, I know you are free 'cause I can see your star shining down on me.
Janet, "Together Again"

I know I'm the lucky one, I know I'm a special one.
I know that God does not have a stepchild.
Janet, "God's Stepchild"

Those are a couple off of the very top of my head! I gotta go now, but I'll have a lot more later!
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.
