Full Moon in Leo

Tuesday, January 25, 2005

This year, the normally fun and playful Full Moon in Leo is surrounded by a whole lot of planets in selfless and serious signs! We have a Venus/Mercury/Chiron conjunction in ever serious Capricorn opposing Saturn in Cancer, reminding us that just two weeks ago we were hard at work setting goals and now is not the time to slack off and play. Additionally, the Leo Full Moon is inconjunct Uranus in Pisces, the ever-present reminder of our own personal insignificance when compared with the power of nature (the tsunami). So though Leo rules creative self-actualization, personal power, and the beauty and magnetism of personal vision, there is so much to be concerned about in our world that thinking about our own desires and/or having a grand old time may not seem like such a great idea. However, whether it is due to Leo's incredibly big need to be seen and loved, or its own healthy dose of narcissism, the Leo Full Moon won't give up without a real fight for our attention.

Leo natives are usually standouts and are always memorable. Leo has a real sense of specialness and perceives all it creates as gifts bestowed upon the rest of us in the name of love and life. Well, honestly is there really any other reason to do much in this world? Leo is the artist, the charismatic leader, the Hollywood star, the sex symbol, the incurable romantic and the Don Juan/Juanita of the zodiac. Even for us commoners, something quite dramatic and amazingly beautiful is bound to happen under a Leo Full Moon. This is the night to let go of worrying about the world for a few hours (I know it's hard right now) and give in to romanticism in all its forms. This is a Full Moon for making love, making art, and making merry.

If you are looking for love, this is the night to take a chance and put yourself out there. Anything can happen under the influence of this most romantic of Moons. Though Capricorn is not the most expansive placement for Venus, love can manifest itself in your life even if it takes a little extra effort. Watch out though, the Full Moon in Leo tends to bring out our vanity. Its energy is focused on self and self-pleasure, and may tempt us all to indulge in the non-necessities of life that make us feel beautiful and pampered. Leo is not very good at feeling guilty about life's luxuries. "I am worth it" belongs to Leo consciousness. Scheduling a massage, changing hairstyle, or buying a sexy new outfit may seem like the solution to all your problems on this Full Moon. Unfortunately, frivolousness and extravagance can be a big hook on a Leo Full Moon. The idea that we can really feel better about ourselves by buying something or changing our appearance is fraught with danger, and is unfortunately is a large part of the belief system of a consumerist society.

How can we counteract this tendency toward superficiality? One way is to plan an intimate evening with your partner; one that revolves around attending to deepening the experience of shared sensual pleasure in all its forms. Passion and desire are at all time high on this night, so use it to rekindle the flame of love in your relationship. Believe me, Valentine's Day has nothing on a Leo Full Moon. So pull out all the stops for the one you love. If you prefer something more social, invite a bunch of friends to go out and have some fun seeing and being seen. Leo loves to be the center of attention, so get out there and shine! It's a great night to support the arts; so go see a play or hear some music. If you are up on that stage, be prepared for a very dramatic and inspiring performance. Maybe even plan an event that can raise money for Tsunami victims. This is a great way to bring together fun and a good cause.

For those of you who made commitments to goals on the New Moon in Capricorn, this is the time to put those plans into action. You get to begin your new life with the self-confidence of a Leo Full Moon opposing Sun in Aquarius, which represents the radical energy to throw out the old self and bring in the new! Chiron in Capricorn will give you added strength to achieve your goals; no matter how hard and long it takes. Remember that on a Full Moon, it helps to release your old behavior through ritual. Use the artist in you and create a representation of the changes you are making. Then burn it in a fire under the bright light of the Leo Full Moon. Remember to handle fire with care by containing it in a fireplace, cauldron or fire ring. After the fire has burned down completely (you might have to wait until morning) take the spent ash and spread it to the four winds, calling in the power of each direction to aid your commitment to change.

For those of you who are creative types, don't be surprised if you feel like being left alone in the studio all day and night, especially with Venus and Mercury in committed, hardworking Capricorn. This is a Full Moon of great inspiration and should not be wasted. If you have been suffering with creative blocks, the Leo Full Moon bestows the energy to break free of inertia and get into action. If it doesn't, you might reconsider your project or direction. Maybe it's just not the right one.

This year the Leo Full Moon will be opposite Neptune and Sun in Aquarius. Some think that Aquarius and Leo are diametrically opposed to one another. But I find their synergistic and interdependent relationship unique among the signs. Aquarius demands radical change, which cannot be accomplished without Leo's talents: unwavering self-belief in one's personal vision and true leadership. Leo demands creativity and caring, which requires the Aquarian rejection of personal glorification in favor of global identification. When balanced, the Leo/Aquarius polarity works hand in hand to further the evolution of human civilization. Corruption, greed and suffering only exist when these energies lack equilibrium. The Leo Full Moon assures us all that we have great personal power and we must learn to use it judiciously. This is the Full Moon to try on the role of leader. If you have wanted to come out front with your great ideas, this is the time to try (especially with the conjunction of planets in Capricorn screaming, "JUST DO IT!") The connection with ego identity is strong on this Full Moon. Leo understands how much power it can wield, and will never shy away from using this knowledge to accomplish even the most outrageous goals.

Forget the stereotypical Leo: a partygoer dancing with a lampshade on their head. Instead, think of showing up with a serious commitment to who you are and not backing down for anything. Leo is total self-belief and it uses total commitment to gain success and glory. Think of Madonna (Sun in Leo); she is a powerful presence who insists upon owning her vision and maintaining total control of the product. As we say in Silicon Valley, "it's all about believing your own marketing." Yes, of course there is a dark side to power and glory. We all know that an inflated ego creates the right conditions for abuses of power. But power used wisely can be of great benefit to all. The beauty of Leo is how much it truly cares about others, and since this is a Full Moon, let's get into a celebratory space and bask in the light of Leo's positive qualities.

This is the most dramatic, elegant and fun Full Moon of the year. So get out and enjoy the fireworks!
