Yeah, my position is that bees probably don't suffer during honey production, or at least not any more than a bee normally suffers during the course of their little bee life. I'm not convinced they are neurologically capable of suffering, but if they are, I don't think their lives are interefered with in such a way as to make them substantially suffer.

I also think that one must draw lines someplace, and for me, stressing about the welfare of insects is just too much.

Additionally, I try not to do things just because the Vegan Police would be pissed if I didn't. I try to use my own head. shrug

However, I do entirely support anybody who wishes to be more careful than I am about insects. I also recognize that, while I've known many self-identified vegans who didn't avoid honey for reasons similar to mine, I'm sure that there are also plenty of people who would be annoyed with me for ever referring to myself as a vegan. Ah well. I find it to be a very convenient label at times. It's much easier to ask, "is that vegan?" than it is to ask, "does that contain meat, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, or any other animal products with the exceptinon of honey?" wink

And really, I think it's inappropriate for people to come down on me for it in any case. I've always been annoyed by "vegetarians" who eat fish, but in recent times, I've decided that calling them on it is a vastly more obnoxious thing to do than what THEY are doing. lol

So basically, anybody who has a problem with it: I understand, but fuck off nonetheless! mr.green

AGREED. Like you, I'm not saying that's occurred in this thread, but all too often, vegans have a tendency to be quite judgmental. You eat what you want to eat, and I'll do the same.

Inhumane? What kind of fucked up philosophy is that? What should we do, invite them over for a cup of tea to have a discussion on contemporary French Semiology? Let them benefit from social security as well? Would that be enough humane for bees?

Seriously, the only valid reason not to eat honey would be the fact that our bodies aren't fully adaptable to digest it, and there are no natural means to acquire it from the hives.

hey, this is just what my vegan ex told me about honey. i'm so glad i don;t date a vegan anymore. can't eat anywhere or anything.

doesn't it depend where the honeey comes from? if you buy it from a small organic bee farm, the bees are less likely to be gassed to death and the honey tastes much better. just wonderin'.
