What's shameful about having plastic surgery?

That you're traumatizing your body, buying into and paying for a standard of beauty that is un-natural to you and don't have enough self-esteem to look at the world and say "fuck you...here I am...love me."

Very few people do. Hence the popularity of make-up,push-up bras, hair salons, estheticians, gyms, etc., etc. I just see it as a matter of degree.

Ah...but, what would tell you if you needed it?

Well, "need" is too strong a word. If there was something about my appearance that I was unhappy about and plastic surgery was the only way to fix it, I'd consider it.

Well...personally...I'm fucking sick of that. I don't want to contribute to the collective self-esteem problem and I think that going as far as having fucking surgery to conform to someone else's standard is buying into it to the nth degree. Sure...I exercise for my health...I like to wear cute clothes and make-up...but, I do it because it's fun...like playing dress-up. I don't do it because I need it to be loved.

You sure you don't do it because you want to appear attractive?

Yep...there are so many different definitions of what people find attractive. I gave up trying to fit that a long time ago. As long as it's fun for me and I like it...then that's all that matters.

We are all happy when our appearance conforms to what is popularly held as "attractive" (or at least in our little subcultures).

Well...there's a fundamental difference between you and I. I do care. I don't let other people tell me how I should feel about myself. I don't let my feelings about myself hinge on perfection according to the next marketing tool of a huge corporation that makes millions off of peoples hatred for themselves. I'm smarter than that. There are many sad, stupid, brainwashed people walking around and I refuse to be one of them. It's a fight.

What are you doing with a soapbox? Isn't soap just a scam by The Man to get us to live up to some grooming ideal? I say you should boycott soap. Be stinky as nature intended and show those muthafathas!

Shut up! lol You know I'm not as extreme as all that. If refusing to have plastic surgery to fit in with some fucked up standard is extreme than the world is more screwed than I thought.

I don't watch this show, but I suppose it shows you the harsh reality of life and - if you wanted to change your looks through cosmetic surgery - what is involved in that.

I think you may be missing the more significant impact...the fact that shows like this change the standard of beauty to something that is un-natural and only obtainable through body mutilation or surgery.

Someone who thinks they need that much of their body altered has some serious body image issues that should be dealt with in therapy. She goes through months of difficult and painful surgery, and every woman on these makeover shows ends up looking exactly the same. Not to mention when the contestants are all brought back for some grand beauty contest. How would it feel, I wonder, to lose a beauty contest to someone who looks exactly like you? I'd be interested in seeing where these women are emotionally in 5 years' time.

Because make-up is not permanent and non-evasive. It doesn't change YOU or endanger your life.

What's the difference if it's permanent or not? I don't see people railing against tattoos. As for endangering your life, you probably have greater odds of dying on the road. It's an individual choice. I just think it's hypocritical for people who kill themselves in the gym trying to make themselves beautiful, and spending tons of money on make-up and hairstyling, etc. to say that cosmetic surgery is bad.

I can wash off my makeup at the end of the day, and neither my tattoos nor my piercings drastically change my appearance or the shape of my body.

Plastic surgery is never the only way to "fix" something you've been brainwashed into believing is unattractive.

Changing your attitude may be harder, but it's a hell of a lot healthier than invasive surgery.
