Worst Movies of 2004

Ok, we have all been through this, a movie is coming out and the hype is overwhelming. There is so much buzz and a pretty decent cast. We start watching the movie and about 20 minutes into it...were like, WTF is going on here? I have no clue, but this movie sucks and were stuck with it. What is the plot? Damn, this is low budget, who the fuck wrote this script? Is this supposed to be scary?

I'd like to start with three nominees:

The Big Bounce

Open Water

The Village

Ok, I guess no one wants to talk about movies on a music site? I thought it would be a popular thread but fuck it. I thought wrong. I was just trying to break the monotney a bit.

It would be cool if they created an "Other Entertainment" forum or something like that.

How about a Movies forum? I always have to wade through GD dreck to find any decent discussion about movies around here.

OK, I'll play. You're out of your mind about "Open Water." That was a great little shocker of a movie. I actually found it MUCH scarier than Jaws.

But, yeah, no movie made me feel more ripped off than The Village. And though I'm probably totally on my own on this, Million Dollar Baby -- corny, tv-movie dreck.

Alexander

Despite the bad reviews before I went to see it, I thought 'Alexander' was going to be great and it aspires to be. The sad truth was is that I found it really rather mind numbing. There is only brief insight into Alexander's psychological profile and nothing much happens.

I found Alexander's relationship with his parents rather muddled and confusig. I wasn't sure whether Olympias is meant to be portraid as a vindictive schemer who treats him more like a boy toy than a son or just a deeply, loving mother. Even more so, Alexander's relationship with Philip is never really fleshed out.

Added to this is, the relationship between Alexander and his boyhood companion Hephaistion (Jared Leto), to whom he says softly, “I’m nothing without you.” They never exchange an onscreen kiss, but their eyes constantly caress each other. Are they in love with each other or just deeply caring friends? You don't know!

There is a problem with the main character. Colin Farrell plays Alexander as a bit of an emotional, Mummy's boy. What’s missing is a truly commanding presence. His attempts to inspire his troops to victory are disconcertingly flat and dry. He seems more like the captain of a school sports team rather than a ruler who seeks to unify the world.

Angelina Jolie gives a mesmerising performance as Olympias. Yet, in a film filled with puzzling accents, hers is foremost. Val Kilmer bluffs, grunts and groans on cue and is not in the picture enough as I would have liked. Jared Leto consistently looks sad-eyed, possibly due to some ill-advised eyeliner. My senses were only aroused to some extent during the scenes with Rosario Dawson playing Alexander's first wife!

Another problem I found with 'Alexander' was it was too dialogue heavy. Even the first of its two huge battle scenes suffers from a surplus of words as midly exciting as they were; particularly the final battle in which the war elephants used are truly impressive. Nevertheless, the plodding film never attains anything resembling a military cadence.

Costumes and sets are outstanding, with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon a stunning achievement. Yet it’s nowhere near as impressive and exciting as say 'Gladiator' or the epics of yore. Sadly, I found Oliver Stone's dream project enough to put me into the land of dreams.

I heard Open Water was great, but haven't seen it. I sort of agree about Million Dollar Baby. It's pretty conventional and sentimental a movie, though fairly well-done I guess. At least it transcended the whole Rocky scenario/formula a bit by offering a right-to-die political message. It felt like an old man's movie to me, all sentimental and lonely. The way my grandfather likes to fantasize about giving me advice and guidance, when it never really works out that way.

My least satisfying movies for 2004 are:
Manchurian Candidate
Monsieur Ibrahim
Adaptation

I try to make a point of avoiding bad movies. These weren't that bad, just not as good as the others I saw.
