Diet Soda

Do you drink diet soda? What is your favorite kind? I have developed a taste for diet Dr. Pepper recently Worst I ever tried was diet Sprite. Honeslty I was really thirsty and I couldn't even finnish it. I try to drink as much water as I can but sometimes it tastes so blah to me. One of my professors told me the reason people gain weight who drink diet soda and not water is not calories because there are none but the sodium. But if you look on the nutritinal lables of most diet sodas there is only like one percent sodium. Can that really make you gain weight? Can you even gain weight from sodium? I thought it was only calories that make you gain weight. Hmmmmm, anyway what is the best tasing diet soda you have tried and the worst?

Diet Pepsi is my favorite. Although I buy Safeway Select - $4.00 for 24 cans! Only $0.16 per can! That's about $0.01 per ounce! woot!

Saccharine, phenylanine and aspartame are all known carcinogens. As I smoke like a chimney already I don't want to ingest any artificial sweeteners.

Yes. Got turned on to diet soda in college.

My favorite brands are:

Diet Sprite Zero (really good with fresh lemon or lime squeezed in)
Diet Pepsi
Minute Maid Light Lemonade (surprisingly good)
Diet Orange Slice (the most true-tasting diet soda, tastes just like regular orange slice)
Diet Ruby Red Squirt

Worst:

Diet Coke
Diet Coke with Lemon
Diet Rite
Diet Shasta (any flavor)

Study suggests link between aspartame and brain cancer

NutraSweet dismisses concerns

November 18, 1996
Web posted at: 12:30 p.m. EST

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Several consumer groups renewed their criticism of aspartame Monday, citing a new study suggesting a possible link between the artificial sweetener and brain tumors.

Aspartame is a low-calorie synthetic sweetener made up of two amino acids and methanol. It is sold under the brand names NutraSweet and Equal and is added to many food products as a sugar substitute.

The Community Nutrition Institute and the Centers for Science in the Public Interest called for more government tests on aspartame, which the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously defended as safe.

The renewed attention follows a medical study published this month in the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology.

In the report, Dr. John Olney of Washington University in St. Louis says brain cancer rates in the United States jumped 10 percent shortly after NutraSweet was approved by the FDA for widespread use in 1983.

The reports says that while there's no proof aspartame is connected to the rise, the increase is suspicious, especially in light of an earlier study showing rats given aspartame developed an unusually high number of brain tumors.

The FDA and NutraSweet dismiss the concerns. They say brain tumor rates started going up before aspartame was put on the market and then leveled off.

Aspartame's defenders also offer a different interpretation of the rat studies, saying there were not any dramatic differences in the number of tumors between rats on aspartame and those that were not.

nod it's amazing how easy it is to live without artificial sweeteners - i used to guzzle down at least 2 two-liter bottles of Diet Coke, plus lots of Nutrasweet in iced tea, etc., and thought i would end up using massive amounts of table sugar instead, but i really don't.

the stuff can't possibly be good for you...

I feel the very same way, except about Diet Dr. Pepper not Diet Coke.

I tried a diet Cherry Vanilla Diet Dr. Pepper yesterday. It was icky. I was really bummed to because when I bought it, I didn't see the "vanilla" part.
I'm firmly planted in denial
