For the last week New York's Hot 97 has been running a hideously unfunny and offensive skit named the "Tsunami Song," that ridicules the victims of the Tsunami as "chinks" whose children will now be sold into child slavery. It's being played on the station's morning show, hosted by Miss Jones.

You may know that one of that show's other hosts, Miss Info, is Asian. She voiced her displeasure with the skit and got into a heated on-air argument with Miss Jones about it. But so far Hot 97 hasn't acknowledged that there's anything wrong with it, and they continue to air it everyday.

As a New Yorker, as a radio person, and as a hip-hop fan I am ashamed and disgusted that Hot 97 is allowing this to broadcast on their airwaves. If you feel the same way you can let them know here:

Miss Jones should know better. (I'm not a very big Jonesie fan to begin with. I'd rather see Joe Budden in her place.) If I recall correctly, she got really bent out of shape when (The Evil) Star and Buc Wild pulled a similarly tasteless stunt a few years ago. I think it was one of the reasons she left. Now she's back. And Star and BW are back in New York at Power 105.1. They're on during the same time slot, too. Maybe the stations are competing to see who can out shock who? (Hot 97 even brought back SmackFest.)

2) Even without pressure, sponsors could choose to yank their advertising, again costing revenue...

3) Again, even without pressure, the person who created and aired the offending song could have been fired, thus eliminating their revenue completely...lol

4) Even without wanting to add pressure or see disciplinary actions taken, listeners could have been turned off enough to have their emotions effect how they now saw this personality and their show...many, MANY actors in hollywood have seen their box office power decrease after taking stances which many within the viewing public disagreed with...

5) Even if none of the above things were to happen, it's usually the case that anyone who needs an offensive "bit" like this to garner higher ratings, will only get higher ratings for a brief moment because they have nothing beyond that momentary offensive act to offer...if they did, they wouldn't need the offending act to begin with. And it's not unusual for ratings to actually drop afterwards, to level below what they were before the offending act...so they take one step forward, and two steps back...the only other alternative is to keep upping the ante, keep finding more and more ways to air "questionable" material, since they feel they need to keep those new listeners/viewers who only tuned in because of the last offending act...listeners/viewers like that tend to move on from one "accident" to another, they aren't all that loyal...

My feeling is that probably a lot if not almost all of their base thought it was funny or didn't care.


This is a disgusting thing- although it doesn't actually hurt anyone directly, it is scummy and appeals to people's uglier side for profit. So let's not give them what they want. ?

I just want to clarify. I think it's funny because it's a parody of those phony ass celebrity benefits. Let's face it people are still starving in Africa, genocides occurred after the "We are the World" and "Live Aid" shams. I think they were more about the artists getting face time and saying "look at me, I'm a caring" person to win more fans than actually helping people. maybe I'm looking at it wrong. I don't think death is funny, children losing their parents is definitely nothing to laugh at. The sad part is a lot of the orphans are probably going to be forced in to the human sex slave trade or prostitution. It's a difficult, emotional situation all around because it's senseless too and destroyed so many futures but I still think the song was kind of funny. My more cynical side will probably say people who think it's nothing to laugh at suffer from the same disorder that a lot of the artists who contributed to those benefits I named earlier... (wait, I just typed that last sentence to start a debate. That wasn't right, sorry.)
